Last week saw a virtual tectonic shift in the cable news world when Fox announced it was terminating its relationship with longtime host and ratings king, Bill O’Reilly. As our friends the Young Conservatives reported, O’Reilly will be continuing an online presence with 4 minute podcasts. But is that really where the spin stops? Perhaps not.
Let’s head over to the White House for a second to review another ongoing story – that of Press Secretary Sean Spicer. For weeks, there have been persistent rumblings that his job is not so secure, after a series of missteps, including his assertion that Adolph Hitler “didn’t even sink to using chemical weapons.”But so far, it appears President Trump is sticking by his man. In a story in the Washington Post on Sunday, the issue of Spicer’s job security was brought up.
One of the attendees [at a recent lunch] wondered whether press secretary Sean Spicer might be the first to go.
The president’s response was swift and unequivocal. “I’m not firing Sean Spicer,” he said, according to someone familiar with the encounter. “That guy gets great ratings. Everyone tunes in.”
The president’s response was swift and unequivocal. “I’m not firing Sean Spicer,” he said, according to someone familiar with the encounter. “That guy gets great ratings. Everyone tunes in.”Trump even likened Spicer’s daily news briefings to a daytime soap opera, noting proudly that his press secretary attracted nearly as many viewers.
For Trump, the old adage that “there’s no such thing as bad press” seems to apply. If you’re in the news and driving the story, that’s a good thing.
So if you want great ratings, find a guy who really knows how to drive them. Who just now happens to be a free agent: Bill O’Reilly. It’s perhaps a not-so-crazy theory lots of folks are considering.

Can you just imagine the ratings bonanza if Bill O’Reilly was giving the daily press briefings? Now wouldn’t THAT be fun to watch.
