There are times when I have to ask myself who is the Republican Party? One of the issues I believe they have as a party on Capitol Hill is a reticence to create a separation between themselves and progressive socialists. We know that the group of liberal progressives referring to themselves as the Democrat Party is enamored with bigger government. It now appears that the Republican Party embraces a concept of “big government” — you know, just a lighter version of “bigger government.”This is the frustration we’re witnessing with a GOP tentative to attack the issue of healthcare head on with constitutional conservative, free market ideals. And there is another very disconcerting legislative policy proposal being presented by the GOP.
As shared over at Family Security Matters, “The ENLIST Act (H.R. 60), currently under consideration, failed to pass in 2014 but is back again. The term “ENLIST” is an acronym for “Encourage New Legalized Immigrants to Start Training.” Here is the summary of this bill as it appears on the Congressional Website: This bill authorizes the enlistment in the Armed Forces of aliens unlawfully present in the United States on December 31, 2012, who: (1) have been continuously present in the United States since such date; (2) were younger than 15 years of age when they initially entered the United States; and (3) are otherwise eligible for original enlistment in a regular component of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard.
The Department of Homeland Security shall adjust the status of an alien enlisted under such authority to the status of an alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence under provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act applicable to aliens who entered the United States prior to January 1, 1972.
On the face of it, H.R. 60 seems reasonable. Joining the military is the ultimate act of patriotism, to go in harm’s way on behalf of the United States. The training the members of our armed forces receive is second to none. The ENLIST Act would provide illegal aliens, including potentially transnational gang members and international terrorists with access to our military bases and that highly valued training. Also, it is vital to note that under federal law 18 U.S. Code § 922(g)(5) it is a crime for illegal aliens: “to ship or transport in interstate or foreign commerce, or possess in or affecting commerce, any firearm or ammunition; or to receive any firearm or ammunition which has been shipped or transported in interstate or foreign commerce.” The ENLIST Act would thus provide such aliens with the lawful authority to possess weapons and ammunition. A disturbing documentary video explicitly reports on the growing numbers of transnational gang members having joined our armed forces and cited an FBI report.”I must ask, why is this piece of legislation being revived in a GOP House majority? First of all, consider this, how can anyone in the United States illegally going to take an oath to support and defend the rule of law, the US Constitution, when they’ve been a part of its violation? Are we to just brush aside the concept of national sovereignty? Another point of order, this was an Obama administration initial proposal that they sought to do via executive order, mandating military recruiters to enlist illegal immigrants…why is the GOP taking up this mantle? Do they truly believe this is going to endear them to a specific voting constituency?
Also, if one studies contributing factors to the collapse of Rome — like failing to secure their northern border — there is another in that the requirement, the obligation, of Roman citizenship to serve in the Legion was changed to anyone within the Roman empire. In essence, Rome began to “outsource” its national security.
I do not advocate for a draft, we have a great all-volunteer military. What we don’t need are these social engineering, political agenda driven policy kabuki dances affecting our defense. Why not just rebuild a military capability and capacity with American men and women, and give them the proper training, equipment, and guidance for victory…peace through strength? This should never be about giveaways…you serve because you love this country. We can ill afford to open the doors of our military to a suspect group at a time when we have a porous border. These are not the times of old when potential “illegal” immigrants sought to prove themselves worthy of American citizenship. And how is it that we’re going to institute a legislative policy that violates U.S. Code? I guess when it comes to a political agenda, anything can be waived.
GOP members sponsoring or cosponsoring this bill need their heads examined. And at a time when we have ISIS investigations in every single state in our country, we do not need the ENLIST Act. I mean seriously folks, SGT Hasan in 2003 and Nidal Hasan give evidence to a great concern we should all have.
So, ask yourself, is this really worth the political capital that could be lost by the GOP? Don’t they realize this is one of those moves that could have an adverse effect for them in the 2018 midterm elections? I mean c’mon, the American people might as well have Nancy Pelosi as House Speaker if this is an indicator of what the House GOP Conference is pushing. Here is the deal: look up all the listed cosponsors of H.R. 60 and call their office. Call the office of House Majority Leader, Rep. Kevin McCarthy, and tell him to trash this ill-conceived legislation. This folly was defeated once in 2014 due to “we the people;” it’s time to drive a stake in it. Call Congressional district offices and tell them to dump this legislation. We do not need illegal aliens serving in uniform. We need to take care of the American men and women currently serving and stop using our military as some political football.
It’s simply incomprehensible that this is actually a real piece of legislation. Republican Representative Jeff Denham (CA-10) is the bill sponsor. He introduced this, again, this past January. One would have thought once was enough for this nonsense. Sorry Jeff, you’re wrong on this, and I stand against your bill.
And I will do everything possible to see its defeat…be careful folks, as this could possibly make its way into the current National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) without our knowing.
