UPDATE: After we published this story, CBS issued the following update to its story correcting the record.Hope Hicks, Donald Trump’s communications director, clarified Donald Trump’s relationship with the Hawaii hotel bearing his name. “He licenses his name for millions of dollars, meaning he has no downside but a lot of upside. There’s no risk for him, he makes a lot of money doing that,” she told CBS News. “And he also has a management contract with the owner, so he’s the operator of the hotel. And it’s operated by Trump Hotel Collections, meaning that when an employee gets a paycheck, [it’s from] Trump Hotel Collections. He manages the property. He employs the people that work there.”
CBS News ran a story that said that Trump’s claim that he employs “many people” at the Trump Hotel Waikiki was false, based on a disclaimer at the bottom of the hotel’s website that suggested the relationship between Trump and the hotel was strictly a licensing deal.ORIGINAL STORY:
One of Donald Trump’s key messages is that he has experience creating jobs and employing many people — more than his GOP rivals, he claims.
While that may be true in some cases, CBS News appears to have uncovered at least one where Trump’s claims about employing people appear to be false.Via CBS News:
Donald Trump on Monday asked the people of Hawaii to vote for him in the March 8 GOP caucuses – claiming he “employs many people” at his Honolulu hotel.
I employ many people in Hawaii at my great hotel in Honolulu. I’ll be there very soon. Vote for me, Hawaii!

There’s one problem here: Trump does not own the Trump International Hotel Waikiki Beach Walk. The Trump company is not involved in any way in selling or developing the property. Here’s the disclaimer at bottom of the hotel’s website:
“Trump International Hotel & Tower® Waikiki Beach Walk® is not owned, developed or sold by Donald J. Trump, the Trump Organization or any of their affiliates. Irongate Azrep BW LLC, the owner and developer of the property, uses the “Trump” name and mark under license from Trump Marks Waikiki LLC, which license may be terminated or revoked according to its terms.”So, in this case, Trump doesn’t even own this hotel; he just licenses his name to it. He sells his brand name to the hotel, but is not involved in the operation. He actually has nothing to do with employing people here.
Disappointing to see any candidate — whomever one supports — resort to lies to help them get elected. And I’m sorry, the line that “everyone does it” doesn’t cut it. Let’s let the Dems own the lies.
And yes, wouldn’t it be nice to see the liberal media dig into the facts behind those Democrat lies like they do with GOP candidates.
