For years, presidents have been the fodder of late-night comedians. Americans have come to expect that late-night comedy will include jokes about and impressions of sitting presidents. Although there’s nothing new about jokes, a study from George Mason University reveals that our current president is on pace to shatter records. From The Hill:
President Trump is setting a new record — as the target of more late-night TV jokes in his first 100 days in office than any recent commander in chief saw in their entire first year. The study from George Mason University released this week finds Trump served as the punchline of 1,060 late-night jokes during his first 100 days in the White House.
That’s more than former president, who was the butt of 936 jokes during his first year in office, and George W. Bush, who was targeted in 546 zingers over a year. Former President
The study, first reported by Politico, notes that Trump is “on track to easily eclipse the most jokes about any individual tracked by [George Mason University’s Center for Media and Public Affairs]Of course, for those of us familiar with the bias against President Trump in the media, the results of the study aren’t exactly surprising. Not only is late-night TV dominated by liberal hosts, those same hosts are more openly hostile to Trump than any other president. It’s a trend that closely mirrors the cable news industry.
The news of the study comes as popular late-night host Stephen Colbert caused controversy after a questionable joke about President Trump. In that segment, Colbert went on an insult spree that eventually ended in an offensive joke, leading for some to call for his termination at the network.
While most wrote off that incident as typical late-night fodder, George Mason’s study paints a different picture. For Trump, the late-night media is more hostile to him than any president before him. What has become increasingly clear is that the American media is never going to give Trump a fair shake. While it is the job of news reporters to question the president and late-night comedians to make jokes, their treatment of this president has been unprecedented.
Whether or not the media elite wants to believe it, the bias is alarmingly clear. As research continues to show, that’s just a fact. Unfortunately for them, that fact is the reason the American people no longer trust them.
