You know how the liberal media loves to say illegals aren’t on welfare or food stamps because they’re ineligible? Well there’s always a way ’round the system…until Donald Trump started cracking down on illegal immigration. Folks are deciding it isn’t worth the risk.Out of fear of deportation, illegals are attempting to go unnoticed by not applying for food stamps and other welfare services, according to the Associated Press (the horror!).
According to their apparently-tragic report, a crackdown on illegal immigration under President Donald Trump has driven some poor people to take a drastic step: opt out of federal food assistance because they are fearful of deportation, activists and immigrants say.People who are not legal residents of the U.S. are not eligible to take part in what is formally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. But many poor families include a mix of non-legal residents and legal ones, such as children who have citizenship because they were born in the U.S. In those cases, it is often an adult who is not a legal resident who submits the application.
Some now feel that is too dangerous under a president who has made immigration enforcement a priority. Throughout the U.S., there are accounts of people resisting efforts of nonprofit organizations to sign them up for food stamps, letting benefits lapse or withdrawing from the program because of the perceived risk.
“They don’t want to put their name and address on a form for a government public benefit out of fear that they’ll be sought out and asked to leave,” said Teresa Smith, executive director of Catholic Charities of Orange County, California.Well, there goes the bogus claim that illegal aliens don’t receive welfare.
Ironically, their withdrawal from the welfare system frees up more money to be spent on immigration enforcement, and the border wall. The article contained a shocking statistic, that “About 3.9 million citizen children living with noncitizen parents received food stamps in the 2015 fiscal year, the most recent available data, according to the Department of Agriculture.”
Welfare benefits are of course only one of many ways illegal immigrants put a burden on the American taxpayer. Of all federal outlays on illegal immigrants, 27 percent is devoted towards “administration of justice,” while 21 percent is medical, and 29 percent is for “general expenditures.” Only 16 percent of costs are public assistance.Plus, illegal immigrants who have children here will have children who are legal citizens. They’re thus entitled to an even larger array of benefits, which itself is a cost of illegal immigration even if this one doesn’t turn up in the statistics for illegal immigrant costs. The total cost of illegal immigration is $113 billion a year at the federal, state, and local level, but the vast majority of the costs ($84 billion) are taken by state and local governments.
There’s a long road ahead until that figure goes to zero – but this is a start.
