With everything going on in America and in the world, I thank God for my simple getaway for respite — college football Saturday, — truly my passion and that of many of you.I’m currently in Carrolton Georgia for a Georgia GOP rally event, but will get a chance to visit the campus of the University of West Georgia Wolves for their homecoming game. So with that being said, here is my assessment of some top games this week.
You Auburn fans know you got away with one this past Thursday night in Manhattan Kansas against Kansas State — three missed field goals and turnovers killed the Cats. But it seems that a potential weakness was exposed in KSUs ability to shut down the vaunted Auburn running game — overall, it was an exciting game to watch. Today brings some interesting match ups two of which are Clemson-Florida State — and let’s see how the Seminoles play with Heisman trophy winner QB Jameis Winston benched for the first half. Clemson’s defense was shredded by the Georgia running game so have they improved? The game is at Doak Campbell Stadium in Tallahassee, advantage Florida State.Another Florida team has a big SEC test as the Gators head to Tuscaloosa to face the Alabama Crimson Tide. This will be a serious gauge as to where the Gators are, after last week having to go to overtime to defeat Kentucky in the Swamp. I can tell ya, those Gator fans are already starting to make rumblings so Gators Coach Will Muschamp needs a good showing. I just cannot wait to boo Lane Kiffin when Bama comes to Knoxville in October — advantage Crimson Tide here.
Once upon a time these two teams met on the gridiron and produced some of college football’s most memorable moments — but I don’t think that will be the case this Saturday. Unranked Miami heads to Lincoln Nebraska to take on the Cornhuskers under the lights. In years past this would have been a featured game between top ten teams, Nebraska is ranked 24 — advantage Big Red at home against a rebuilding Hurricanes squad.
There is also a quiet sleeper of a game between Mississippi State and LSU — after the comeback the Tigers put on Wisconsin — gotta go with the Mad Hatter Les Miles, Geaux Tigers.Lastly, a game where there could be a potential upset will be number four Oklahoma — coming off a 34-10 victory over my alma mater Tennessee — traveling to Morgantown to face West Virginia. However, the young Vols defense held the Sooners to only one offensive TD in the entire second half before the home crowd at Owen Field in Norman. Let’s see if the Mountaineers can pull it out against the visiting Sooner Schooner — I still think Oklahoma pulls it out.
Ok, what is your favorite team this weekend? And here is my early college football sleeper alert — watch out for Brigham Young University. BYU could just run the table and end up undefeated. And it would be real hard not to allow the Cougars one of the four spots in the college football playoff.
