Why we all need to visit Philadelphia – and it’s not just cheesesteaks

Just arrived in Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love, as this evening I will be part of the WPHT Speaker Series with host Dom Giordano at Valley Forge Military Academy and College.

Of course being in Philly there are two things I want to experience. One is an authentic Philly Cheesesteak — that comes later this evening after the event. The other is to take in the history of Philadelphia, namely, seeing Constitution Hall and the Liberty Bell. So, to my surprise, I found my hotel was just two doors down on Chestnut Street.

What an incredible feeling and a swelling of emotion to drive past the famous building where men gathered and established this great Constitutional Republic, the birthplace of our Declaration of Independence and Constitution.

However, it is also the place where as the story goes, the deliberations of the Constitutional Convention of 1787 were held behind closed doors. No one inside the hall had a Blackberry or iPhone to live tweet the discussions. Concerned citizens had to wait outside Independence Hall for the deliberations to end before they could learn what had been decided. When the doors finally opened, it is said a woman asked Benjamin Franklin, “Well, Doctor, what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?” To which Franklin supposedly responded, “A republic, if you can keep it.”

So tonight at Valley Forge, an integral part of our early military history, I shall have the honor of discussing my newly-released book, “Guardian of the Republic.” Yes, we do still have a Republic, but the challenge, the clarion call I issue, is for all of us to be Guardians, not subjects and certainly not cowards — in this fight against progressive socialism.

Perhaps everyone needs to visit Philadelphia, walk down Chestnut Street, and visit the hall in order to own up to the challenge that Benjamin Franklin presented to us over 200 years ago.

I look forward to seeing many of you on the trail and will challenge you all to become Guardians. Next stop after Philadelphia, the Pacific Northwest and a visit to Washington State.
