Team “Crush Political Correctness” is starting to draw some additional teammates that are, shall we say… surprising. First it was liberal comedian Chelsea Handler. Now, within the same week, comes news of a former top economic aide to Presidents Clinton and Obama, and one-time president of Harvard University, Larry Summers, “dissing” politically correct culture at universities. As he was quoted by Campus Reform:
… it seems to be that there is a kind of creeping totalitarianism in terms of what kind of ideas are acceptable and are debatable on college campuses.I think the answer to bad speech is different speech… the answer to bad speech is not shutting down speech.
The idea that somehow microaggressions in the form of a racist statement contained in a novel should be treated in parallel with violence or actual sexual assault seems to me to be crazy. I worry very much that if our leading academic institutions become places that prize comfort over truth—that prize the pursuit of mutual understanding over the pursuit of better and more accurate understanding—then a great deal will be lost.
Well, well, well. Welcome to the party, Dr Summers. It’s always great when some of the lavishly-educated, expensively-caffeinated join the common sense crew.Universities have become left-wing seminaries, with corduroy-jacketed academics themselves now starting to fall victim to the aggressive anti-micro-aggression crowd. Meanwhile, the only contribution of university presidents faced with the onslaught has been to bob like a cork in the slip stream of the whiny millennial mob.
No doubt Dr. Summers’ words have the delicate snowflakes at the richest and most coddled institutions in the world angry, outraged, tearful, and absolutely beside themselves with rage and horror.
The irony is that within the places where brains should be most easy to find, the overwhelming majority wouldn’t have enough to blow their nose, if brains were dynamite.[Note: This article was written by Nick Adams, author of the brand new book: Retaking America: Crushing Political Correctness.
