New York Times get SLAMMED with massive lawsuit over fake news

Earlier this month, the New York Times took the story of the shooting at a Congressional Republican baseball practice by a crazed leftist and somehow used the opportunity to attack Sarah Palin.

“In 2011, when Jared Lee Loughner opened fire in a supermarket parking lot, grievously wounding Representative Gabby Giffords and killing six people, including a 9-year-old girl, the link to political incitement was clear. Before the shooting, Sarah Palin’s political action committee circulated a map of targeted electoral districts that put Ms. Giffords and 19 other Democrats under stylized cross hairs,” the editors wrote.

It was a mere coincidence that Giffords had been in Palin’s cross-hairs, and a target of violence, as Loughner had reported a longstanding dislike for Giffords. It’s unlikely that Loughner, a leftist, was in any position to be influenced by Palin anyway.

It was the second time that the Times’ editors have blamed Palin for Gifford’s shooting. The Times ran a similar editorial in 2011 that — again, without any evidence to support such a conspiracy theory — cast blame at Palin for Giffords’ shooting.

It wasn’t until 12 hours until after publication that the Times removed the language blaming Palin for the shooting of Gabrielle Giffords. An editor’s note was later added after more criticism, stating “an earlier version of this editorial incorrectly stated that a link existed between political incitement and the 2011 shooting of Representative Gabby Giffords.” In fact, no such link was established.

No kidding.

Perhaps they should’ve acknowledged that initially – because it would’ve saved them a lawsuit.

According to the Washington ExaminerSarah Palin is suing the New York Times over an editorial that linked her to the 2011 shooting of then-Democratic Rep. Gabby Giffords.

Palin filed the lawsuit Tuesday in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York.

“Mrs. Palin brings this action to hold The Times accountable for defaming her by publishing a statement that it knew to be false,” the lawsuit alleges.

The original version of the Times editorial, which focused on the shooting this month at a congressional Republican baseball practice, said “the link to political incitement was clear” in the Giffords shooting. It noted that Palin’s political action committee had “circulated a map of targeted electoral districts that put Ms. Giffords … under stylized crosshairs.”

But evidence has suggested that Jared Loughner, the shooter, was a longtime critic of Giffords and government in general.

Palin calls it defamation – we call it fake news.
