The college football season is drawing to an end — doggone wish they played longer. Anyway, some really good games today that will have implications on the playoff rankings for next week. And I must admit, the folks on the committee are doing a pretty good job, much easier to follow than the BCS metrics. The Allure of the Seas doesn’t dock in Port Everglades until Sunday morning, so I’ll miss some great games today. My Tennessee Vols come off a bye week to take on the Kentucky Wildcats in Neyland Stadium this afternoon. It would be a big boost if the Vols could run the table on these last four games of the season and wind up 7-5 and maybe even get a bowl bid. Just want the Volunteer faithful to look at what Dan Mullen has done at Mississippi State.
Speaking of the Bulldogs of Mississippi State, they have a high game on the road in Tuscaloosa against the Crimson Tide of Alabama. Bama is 4-0 at home this year with an average win margin or 40 points. Miss State went on the road and had a huge win against Texas A&M — Bama beat the Aggies 59-0 at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Mississippi defeated LSU in Death Valley at night and so did Bama last week. I don’t see Miss State having a lot of pressure on them — no one expected them to be where they are. On the other hand, Alabama has big expectations and will have more pressure on them. I will say Miss State prevails in a very hostile environment.Up in that conference known as the Big Ten, they have a pretty big game happening — Ohio State vs Minnesota, a surprising team. The Buckeyes really took it to Michigan State on the road in East Lansing…so I think they will do fine against the Golden Gophers in the Twin Cities. I give the edge to Brutus and OSU. Another Big Ten game has 8-1 Nebraska Cornhuskers going to Camp Randall Stadium in Madison to take on the Wisconsin Badgers. Haven’t really followed either team, but I know the Badgers are tough at home.
Down in Florida it’s the ugly rivalry between Florida State and Miami — there have been some doozies in that series. However, right now one football program is at a different level. It may be close for awhile, but “Fear the Spear” and the Seminoles will prevail on the road in South Florida. Notre Dame gave Florida State a huge challenge — I don’t think Miami can.
A couple of other games to watch will be Clemson traveling to Atlanta to face Georgia Tech — when the triple option is working, it is unstoppable. And Auburn heads over “between the hedges” at Sanford Stadium to face the Georgia Bulldogs — big time revenge over what happened last year in Jordan-Hare Stadium in the Georgia-Auburn game. Auburn is coming off the disappointing loss to Texas A&M and wants to salvage their season. We’ll have to see which Georgia team shows up against Auburn — the Bulldog faithful are hoping it’s not the team who played Florida.Enjoy your favorite college football game today. Wish I could be there with you.
