On Wednesday, Sen. Cory Booker stated he plans to introduce a bill to Congress that would remove Confederate statues from the U.S. Capitol building in response to the civil unrest rocking the country in the wake of violent protests in Charlottesville.

Booker, a Democrat from New Jersey, announced his plans on Twitter, though he gave no information about a timeline for when the statues would be removed should the measure pass.

Senator Cory Booker on Wednesday said he would introduce legislation to remove Confederate statues from the U.S. Capitol building.

Booker, D-New Jersey, announced his plans on Twitter, but he did not layout a timeline for the proposal.

“I will be introducing a bill to remove Confederate statues from the US Capitol building,” he tweeted. “This is just one step. We have much work to do.”

The Capitol building’s National Statuary Hall Collection features at least a dozen monuments that honor Confederate soldiers and politicians, according to records maintained by the Architect of the Capitol.

The Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) has also called for these statues to be removed.

These monuments have been coming down left and right all across the country in the wake of last weekend’s white nationalist protest in Charlottesville, VA.

One person died during that demonstration, and many others were injured, after a white supremacist drove his vehicle into a group of counter-protesters.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions called the act “domestic terrorism” and is said to be treating it as a hate crime.

Booker’s proposal comes just after President Trump made statements calling for the statues to be left alone, stating that we cannot erase history — no matter how awful — and that we can learn valuable lessons from being reminded of our heritage.
