Jane Sanders, the wife of former democratic-socialist presidential candidate Bernie Sanders, has found herself under FBI investigation for a scandal relating to her leadership at Vermont’s Burlington College, where she served as president from 2004-2011. The small liberal arts college went bankrupt in May of 2016, and while she was no longer the school’s president, all eyes were on her. After all, it was Jane Sanders who took on a massive amount of debt in a fruitless effort to expand the school in the years leading up to her departure. It was ironic, considering the policies of her husband would do the same, albeit at the national level.
While it’s no crime to take on debt, part of the FBI probe’s goal was to determine if Sanders provided her creditors with faulty information (such as over-estimating the amount of donations the college was expected to receive) when applying for the loans in question. As for what the FBI has found thus far, the vice chairman of Vermont’s Republican Party told Fox News Wednesday night that the federal investigation into Sen. Bernie Sanders’ wife is “firmly based on facts and figures and analysis,” not hearsay.
The FBI is looking at allegations Jane Sanders fraudulently obtained a loan to purchase 33 acres of land for the expansion of Burlington College in 2010.
Brady Toensing, who also chaired President Donald Trump’s campaign in Vermont, told “Tucker Carlson Tonight” that Jane Sanders, the school’s president at the time, had sought a $6.5 million bank loan to buy the property from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Burlington. Toensing is the man responsible for filing a complaint against Jane Sanders. His own personal investigation began in 2014 with a public records request.“In order to get those loans, she had to confirm guaranteed donations of $2.6 million,” Toensing alleged. “Of that $2.6 million, the school was only able to collect about 25 percent … and of the confirmed donations, three of the donors have come forward to say that the school overstated their pledge amounts.”
“If you look at who was harmed by this whole financial debacle, the Catholic Church lost almost $2 million, the taxpayers of Vermont lost almost $150,000, the bank lost untold amounts of money and the school went bankrupt,” he said. “But [Jane and Bernie Sanders], they were not financially harmed.”
The Catholic Church? Wow…
As for a role of Bernie Sanders in this whole mess, Toensing claims that a source told him Bernie’s office played a role in pressuring the bank to grant his wife’s loan.Bernie has refused to answer any public questions regarding that. Wonder why?
