American liberals love to think they’re the champions of social justice and tolerance. In their view, support of conservative policies proves you’re a bigot. Supporting the police is racist, defending religious freedom is homophobic, and wanting to secure the border is xenophobic.Of course, one doesn’t have to look far to see the hypocrisy in their argument. To start, look no further than the left’s full embrace of traditional Islam. Despite the ideology being the most hostile to the LGBT community and women, liberals have rushed to its defense. It’s an alliance so strange, our colleague Matt Palumbo devoted an entire book to exploring it.
In truth, a large portion of the Muslim world stands against everything liberals claim to believe in. Typically, any slight against the LGBT community would cause an uproar from the American left. However, something tells me liberals won’t make a peep over a new Muslim boycott of Starbucks.
From the Chicago Tribune:
Muslim groups in Malaysia and Indonesia have called for a boycott of Starbucks because of the coffee chain’s support for LGBT rights.Malaysian group Perkasa, which supports a hard-line form of Islam and nationalism, this week called on its more than 500,000 members to stay away from Starbucks coffee shops. This week and last, leaders of Indonesia’s second largest mainstream Muslim group, Muhammadiyah, with an estimated 29 million members, denounced the chain.
The groups were apparently reacting to comments made several years ago by former CEO Howard Schultz in support of gay rights that drew renewed attention amid an increasingly anti-LGBT climate in both of the predominantly Muslim countries.
The groups are also boycotting other American companies:Perkasa said in a statement that the Malaysian government should revoke the trading license given to Starbucks and other companies such as Microsoft and Apple that support LGBT rights and same-sex marriage.
Amini Amir Abdullah, who heads Perkasa’s Islamic affairs bureau, said Muslims should stay away from Starbucks because its pro-gay rights policy is against Islam and Malaysia’s constitution. The attitude isn’t surprising, considering homosexuality is actually against the law in many Muslim majority countries:
Sodomy is illegal in Malaysia and punishable by up to 20 years in prison. Homosexuality is not illegal in Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim nation, but a case before the Constitutional Court is seeking to criminalize gay sex and sex outside of marriage.
This isn’t the first time Starbucks has faced a boycott. Earlier this year, the liberal company promised to hire 10,000 refugees in response to Trump’s travel ban. The move was predictably unpopular with conservatives, inspiring a boycott of the coffee chain. In that case, liberals were up in arms over the “bigotry” of Trump supporters.
However, the liberal outrage machine has been completely silent about the Muslim boycott. When it comes to love trumping hate, liberals give Islam a free pass.
