Sheriff Clarke OUT

Last month, “The People’s Sheriff,” David Clarke dropped the news on conservative radio host Vicki McKenna’s show that he was “honored and humbled” to have been offered the position of Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security in the Trump administration.

Initially, administration officials said the news was premature…and it has turned out to be so.

As The Hill reports, Clarke was expected to start in his new role the end of this month, but “An adviser to Clarke told The Washington Post that the sheriff had officially notified Secretary of Homeland Security John Kelly late Friday that he had rescinded his acceptance.”

During the 2016 presidential race, Clarke supported President Trump, and he has praised him since the inauguration. At the Conservative Political Action Conference in February, Clarke spoke of his support for Trump’s executive orders on immigration. He would have worked with such policies had he been confirmed for the Homeland Security job.

The list of high-profile potential appointees who’ve been considered and then withdrawn their hats from the Trump ring is long and getting longer. Two that spring to mind are Andrew Puzder, who dropped out of the running for Labor Secretary and Vincent Viola for Secretary of the Army. Mark Green, Trump’s second pick for the post, also dropped out.

The Washington Post tracks how many positions Trump has filled so far, and 415 of the 558 positions that require Senate confirmation have NO nominee.

Not surprisingly, Trump is well behind his predecessors in his pace to fill the positions:

Yes, the Senate (at the behest of Chuck Schumer) is doing its best to drag the process on as slowly as possible, but a source has revealed to us that Trump’s personnel office is woefully understaffed for the task.

The other problem is, all of the “acting” people in those roles are most likely Obama administration holdovers. The “Deep State,” or shall we call it “Deep Swamp” is profound indeed.

Sheriff Clarke no doubt has a bright future ahead in whatever path he chooses. We wish him well.
