Things haven’t been great for Megyn Kelly lately. After leaving her position at Fox News, she was forced into a lengthy legal battle over the terms of her contract. After seemingly putting that behind her, her debut on NBC was overshadowed by a gaffe shortly into her first live appearance. Clearly, the well-known anchor has seen better days.Of course, Kelly thought she would have a chance to redeem herself quickly. After all, she was in Russia to do a huge interview with Vladimir Putin. The interview was sure to give Kelly the national spotlight, but it went horribly wrong.
From the Daily Caller:
Russian president Vladimir Putin became so angry at Megyn Kelly’s questions about Russian election interference Friday that he pulled his ear piece out twice Friday.
The anger came after Kelly tried to press Putin into commenting on allegations that Russia interfered in the 2016 election:Putin seemed to disingenuously and condescendingly praise Kelly before ripping out his ear piece.
“Everyone should take the American mass media’s role model. Megyn has been demonstrating today high class in her profession,” he said before alleging he didn’t know where the DNC leaks came from.
“…and what President Trump has been saying…just show me the quote where he said he won because of Russian intervention,” he finished before popping the ear piece back in. “I don’t remember him saying so.”Kelly, not backing down, said, “[Trump] finally came around to say, ‘I think Russia did it’ and he said, ‘I don’t think he’ll do it again.’”
Putin smirked at Kelly, and said “this is not as simple as having an interview or writing an article in a newspaper” before pulling out the ear piece again.
Afterwards, Putin denied Russia’s involvement, going so far as to accuse the U.S. of using similar tactics:
“As for the interference, look at what your colleagues are doing in our country,” Putin remarked. “They have been deep down in our domestic policies doing what they want, enjoying themselves, on a systemic basis for many years.”
After months away from TV, Kelly’s tenure at her new job couldn’t be off to a worse start. Far from roaring back to prominence, Kelly’s first few days have been overshadowed by multiple gaffes.
It will be interesting to see where things go from here for Kelly. Having supposedly alienated many colleagues at her previous employer, the journalist will have an uphill battle trying to regain what she lost. Although her anti-Trump sentiments may play better to an NBC audience, she’ll have to do better than her first few days on the job.
