There are many mysteries we humans would love to solve. How did we get here? Are we alone in the universe? Why did the chicken cross the road? These are the questions of our time. However, perhaps no mystery has captured the imagination of America more than President Trump’s late night tweet:
Just after midnight, the president set off an internet firestorm with just one tweet. Not only did Trump not finish his thought, but he appears to have made up a completely new word. The tweet was never elaborated upon, remaining up for five hours as the internet raced to decode the message.
Was it a typo? A secret message? We may never be sure. But Press Secretary Sean Spicer attempted to unravel the mystery for us.
From the Hill:White House press secretary Sean Spicer on Wednesday offered a cryptic explanation for President Trump’s incomplete, misspelled tweet that went viral overnight.
“The president and a small group of people know exactly what he meant,” Spicer told reporters.
The spokesman’s refusal to admit Trump made a mistake prompted laughter from members of the media at the White HouseSpicer’s explanation left us with more questions than answers. For his part, President Trump added even more fuel to the fire, tweeting a new message 6 hours later:
The typo (or was it a typo?) continues to set off a media firestorm, which kind of sums up the state of our politics in 2017. When one innocuous tweet dominates a news cycle, you know things have gotten pretty strange.Perhaps we will never know what covfefe means. Maybe it will go down in the history books as the greatest mystery of the 21st century. Or maybe it was just a simple typo.
For now, one of the mysteries of our time rages on. Which came first: the chicken or the egg? The egg. What did Donald Trump mean by “covfefe”? Nobody knows!
