Warning: Proposed new assault on free speech rights should worry EVERY American

Portland’s mayor, Ted Wheeler, is doing his best to step on the First Amendment rights of local citizens by calling on the federal government to stop what he claims are two “alt-right” demonstrations coming up in his fair city.

This decision is, no doubt, fueled by the recent stabbing deaths of two people who were supposedly attempting to stop a hate crime.

Wheeler is demanding the government revoke the permits obtained for the rallies.

According to CNN:

The mayor of Portland, Oregon, is trying to stop what he describes as two upcoming “alt-right” demonstrations as his city continues to mourn the stabbing deaths of two residents who intervened in a possible hate crime.

Mayor Ted Wheeler on Monday called on the federal government to revoke the permit for a rally set for Sunday, and to deny permission for a second rally on June 10.

The two gatherings — backed by different organizers — are planned for a park on federal land, which gives federal authorities control over issuing permits.

“Our city is in mourning, our community’s anger is real, and the timing and subject of these events can only exacerbate an already difficult situation,” Wheeler posted on Facebook.

Wheeler stated the city of Portland would not grant the permits for both rallies to be held in early June, saying his main concern is that these groups might “peddle a message of hatred and bigotry.”

The mayor claims to acknowledge the groups’ First Amendment rights, while also claiming “hate speech” isn’t protected by the Constitution.

Clearly, this man does not understand the Constitution, because all speech — minus the whole “fire” in a theater deal — is protected under the Bill of Rights.

Just because it’s not a message someone agrees with or likes, doesn’t grant the right to take away the freedom for people to express themselves, nor do those who object have to just sit idly by. Those who disagree can exercise their own free speech rights.

It’s called the battlefield of ideas, and it’s what makes our nation great, what has enabled us as a culture and society to thrive.

Too bad liberals don’t get that.
