It’s ironic that today’s Democratic Party has become the party of identity politics — because history certainly isn’t on the side of their Party. If they want to lecture us on the “racist history of America,” they should be aware of the role their Party played in it.In the latest video from Prager University, Vanderbilt University’s Professor Carol Swain explains that during the mid-1800’s, the Democrats were the party in favor of slavery while the Republican Party was the Party founded to oppose it. It was Democrat justices who ruled in the shameful Dred Scott v. Sandford case that slaves were property, which set the stage for the Civil War.
The Republican responsible for ending slavery, Abraham Lincoln, was assassinated by a Democrat, John Wilkes Booth. It was Republicans who ushered in the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution, the “Reconstruction Amendments,” which officially ended slavery, and granted blacks the right to vote.
Even as recently as the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it was thanks to eighty percent of Congressional Republicans that the historic Act was passed, while only roughly sixty percent of Democrats voted in favor. Democrat President Lyndon Johnson does get credit for signing the Act into law, but his intentions were only political, as he was purported to have said about the Act, “I’ll have them n*****s voting Democrat for the next 200 years.”
