As we reported earlier last week, Immigration and Customs Enforcement is doing much more than raiding to find illegal aliens under Donald Trump’s watch – they’re also working to take gang members off the street. The department announced last Thursday that an ICE-led anti-gang operation resulted in 1,378 individuals across the country being arrested, with 1,095 belonging to, or being affiliated with the Bloods, Crips, Sureños, and MS-13.
The trans-national Salvadorian MS-13 in particular have been linked to a number of high-profile violent killings as of recently. Members of the gang are believed to be responsible for the recent deaths of at least 11 young people on Long Island, New York. In El Salvador, the world’s murder capital (with 116 murders per 100,000 people, compared to “only” 27.9 per 100,000 people in Chicago), the two main gangs responsible for the violence are the aforementioned MS-13 and their main rival, the 18th Street Gang.
As you’d expect, El Salvador really doesn’t want us to deport these gang members, for reasons that bolster Trump’s arguments about illegal immigration and crime.
As the Daily Caller reported,Top Salvadoran officials are worried about deportations of their compatriots from the U.S., as they think the returnees will cause crime.El Comercio wrote Thursday that El Salvador’s Minister of Defense David Munguia Payes told reporters, “We know that if there are massive deportations from the U.S., it will increase violence in the country.”
The worry from Salvadoran officials is due to the Trump administration’s focus on MS-13, a Salvadoran gang whose leadership still remains in the Central American nation. MS-13 gained strength in the 1990s after thousands of gang members were deported from the U.S.
A recent report from a think tank said that to prevent violence in Central America the Trump administration should “refrain from instigating mass deportations or harsher anti-migration measures.”One can only wonder why those folks think it’s our responsibility to bear crime from their citizens who entered our country illegally. Perhaps they think we should imprison them instead? Certainly they’re capable of doing the same.
