Pundits’ reactions to Donald Trump’s campaign foreign policy statement of “We’re going to kick the S**T out of ISIS!” ranged from scoffing to laughing to accusations of a rookie talking tough before suiting up in the big leagues. We’re learning that Trump is more than just talk.Various newswires are now reporting that the U.S. military dropped what CBS News has called “the mother of all bombs” onto fortified ISIS strongholds. in Afghanistan.
The GBU-43 bomb is America’s largest non-nuclear bomb and was deployed for the first time ever last night. A GBU-43 was dropped onto ISIS fighters and known facilities in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province, White House officials have said.
White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said that the GBU 43 weapon was used Wednesday around 7 p.m. local time in Afghanistan. He called the weapon “large, powerful” and accurate. The strike targeted tunnels and caves used by ISIS.
From the Independent UK:“The US has dropped what has been described as the largest non-nuclear bomb in the country’s arsenal on an area of eastern Afghanistan known to be populated by ISIS-affiliated militants.
The Pentagon said the strike was the first time the 21,000lb weapon had been used in combat operations.
A spokesperson for the US Department of Defence confirmed to The Independent that a MC-130 aircraft dropped a GBU-43 bomb at 7pm local time. The weapon is known in the US Air Force by its nickname MOAB, or “mother of all bombs”. MOAB stands for massive ordinance air blast.
White House press secretary Sean Spicer said the US had used a “large, powerful and accurately-delivered weapon” to disrupt the movements of militants in the country.Pentagon spokesman Adam Stump said the bomb was dropped on a cave complex believed to be used by fighters affiliated to Isis in the Achin district of Nangarhar, close to the border with Pakistan.
The Pentagon said the mission had been in the planning stages for months. However, they “did not have the information” on whether the mission was being planned during the previous Obama administration.
“This is the right munition to reduce these obstacles and maintain the momentum of our offensive against Isis,” General John Nicholson, the head of US and international forces in Afghanistan, said in a statement. “
This strike, combined with the barrage of missiles taking out an airbase in Syria, marks a clear departure from eight years of Obama-era Middle-East foreign policy. Bad actors in the region like Bashar al-Assad, and others running around waving an ISIS flag, best take notice. The days of America’s policy being talk, lecture, and talk some more have clearly come to an end. Donald Trump’s belief is that the fewer ISIS fighters there are in the world the better — and he’s walking it like he’s talking it. The United States President seems determined to kick the S**T out of ISIS.
