Comic books these days are not at all stuff for children, coming packed with stories that often reflect the turmoil of the times we’re living in, and, thanks to the radical left, chock full of forced attempts at “diversity.”Especially for Marvel Comics, one of the leading publishers of these books, who has decided that pushing progressivism down the throats of the fans whether it fits in with the story being told or not is the right thing to do.
We’ve seen Iron Man become Riri Williams, a teenage girl, Captain America become a pro-illegal immigration African-American, and Thor become a woman. All in the last five years.Normally such changes wouldn’t be that big of a deal, as many of these characters have passed the mantel on to other individuals, but it’s always been in the context of the narrative being told rather than to appease social justice warriors.
Well, Marvel’s vice president is finally admitting the reason the company has seen their sales crashing down is because readers aren’t really down with the fake Social Justice Warrior-style “diversity” push they’ve been doing.According to The Daily Wire, On Monday, Marvel Comics admitted what those who actually read comics have known all along: the emphasis on leftist messaging in comic books is killing the appeal.
David Gabriel, the vice president of sales at Marvel, said that comic book retailers were reporting a drop-off in interest in the new, diversity-oriented comics: “What we heard was that people didn’t want any more diversity. They didn’t want female characters out there. That’s what we heard, whether we believe that or not. I don’t know that that’s really true, but that’s what we saw in sales…Any character that was diverse, any character that was new, our female characters, anything that was not a core Marvel character, people were turning their nose up.”
It’s not racism driving people away from Marvel, though. It’s a feeling of irritation that classic characters are being redrawn and recast in order to assuage the feelings of social justice warriors. Iron Man is Tony Stark, not Riri Williams. Captain America is Steve Rogers, not Sam Wilson. Thor is Thor, not female Thor. Spider Man is Peter Parker, not Miles Morales. This isn’t to say that the comics with Miles Morales aren’t good (they’re actually really good, although the Iron Man series with Riri Williams isn’t any good at all). It’s to say that nobody wants to see iconic superheroes recast as completely different people to appease quotas on race and sex. Superheroes are brands. You can’t twist those brands without hurting them.
Here’s the kicker.
Despite the fact they know folks aren’t going to buy these comics due to the forced diversity angle, they’re still going to continue making them, beating folks over the head with the same tired SJW message and mentality that’s currently leaving fans cold and worn out.
Not everything these days has to have a political agenda, yet that’s what creative types seem to think. Rather, what should be done is to prioritize storytelling over politics, and if necessary, allow that angle to play a natural part of the narrative being expressed.Unfortunately, that doesn’t make creators and writers look hip and cool to the progressive crowd, so they keep on doing the same old thing even though it’s causing their business to fail.
