There was a brief moment of awkward silence yesterday when Nancy Pelosi was asked whether or not she’d met with Russia’s ambassadors following her accusations Republicans are “making excuses and splitting hairs” surrounding Jeff Sessions’ failure to disclose meeting with top Russian diplomat, Sergey Kislyak. Sessions’ defense is that he was asked whether or not he met with any Russian ambassadors in the context of discussing the Trump campaign.“Not with this Russian ambassador [Kislyak], no,” she stated. “Is it normal to meet with ambassadors?” she was asked in response. “Yeah,” Pelosi responded.
And with that defense she has something in common with Sessions when it comes to failing to disclose meeting with Kislyak before. Here she is in 2010 with Kislyak, pictured third from the top on the left.
And her excuse? A spokesperson for Pelosi stated that what she had meant is that she had never met privately with the ambassador. “Of course, that’s what she meant,” spokesman Drew Hammill told Politico. “She has never had a private one-on-one with him.”
Now the context of the question matters? Interesting. It really seems like she’s just making excuses and splitting hairs.
