“I have a dream that one day right there in Alabama little black boys and little black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers. I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave-owners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood.”–Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Sitting down together at the table of brotherhood is going to be hard to do if those tables are once again located in separate buildings. Which is just what a student activist group at the University of Michigan — and other college campuses around the nation — are “demanding.”
In what’s becoming a new epidemic in America, students at colleges and universities are now routinely placing “demands” upon the institutions, petitioning them to capitulate to whatever their cause or wants are or…they’ll hold their collective breaths until they turn blue and die?
All across America black students have demanded that they be segregated from their white peers by calling for “safe spaces” on campuses meant only for PoCs (persons of color). The College Fix has reported on many such “demands,” most recently at the University of Michigan:
A student activist group at the University of Michigan is demanding campus officials provide them with “a permanent designated space on central campus for Black students and students of color to organize and do social justice work.Detroit Free Press
But apparently a BRAND NEW BUILDING of their own isn’t enough so the students have produced a new list of “demands” and are holding their breaths until they get them. “This list of demands also calls for more support for “marginalized” students “when oppressive attacks occur,” increasing the affirmative action of “Black, Arab, and other PoCs” in tenured faculty, more readily alerting students on campus of “bias incidents,” and offering “more financial aid for those of lower socioeconomic status.”Requests for segregated spaces on campus are popping up everywhere. “Demand lists” put forth by students on campuses across the nation allege that campuses are oppressive, discriminatory, and filled with institutionalized racism. These “demand lists” are chronicled by TheDemands.org, a website run by a racial advocacy group called the Black Liberation Collective.
Splashed across its homepage is:
“Across the nation, students have risen up to demand an end to systems and structural racism on campus. Here are their demands.” Followed by links to the “Demand lists” of students at 80 American colleges and universities.
As proof that U of Michigan is not unique, the Afrikan Student Union at UCLA is insisting upon an “Afrikan Diaspora floor” as well as an “Afro-house.” “Black students lack spaces where they feel safe and comfortable. The Afrikan Diaspora floor is a way for us to connect more to other Black students…The floor should be branded as a safe space for all Black students.”
Dr. King’, your dream has come full circle. From your days of envisioning an America were whites would accept blacks as equals and end segregation, now blacks are seeking to re-segregate and turn the hands of time in the wrong direction.
