His own presidential bids may not have been successful, and he didn’t get picked to head President Donald Trump’s State Department, but Mitt Romney’s career in politics may not be over yet.According to The Blaze:
Former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney admitted that he is mulling over a run for the U.S. Senate in 2018.
He made the comments to Deseret News, who reported that he [Romney] mentioned the 2018 Senate race, and said, “I don’t have any predictions on what I might do. I’m not going to open a door and I’m not going to close a door. All doors are open.”
Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) is up for re-election in 2018 but has not announced if he’ll run again after holding the office for 40 years.“I’m not looking forward to anything political at the national level,” he added. “We’ve got some races coming up here in Utah that are going to be interesting. We’ll see what happens on that front.”
Despite his criticisms of Trump in the past, Romney only had positive comments to make. “We’re all watching with interest. He’s obviously gotten off to a very strong start in terms of making a series of executive orders and making the changes that he promised during the campaign.” He also praised Trump for the nomination of Judge Gorsuch to the Supreme Court.
Regarding the Secretary of State job, Romney said, “I had very good meetings with, at that point, President-elect Trump,” adding that he was encouraged that Trump “was willing to talk to me, given the fact that I had been so critical.”Another former Republican presidential candidate, Jon Huntsman, is also eyeing a run against Orrin Hatch. According to HotAir, a poll taken two weeks ago had Huntsman crushing Hatch in a hypothetical primary, 62/21.
Bill Kristol commented that, “a successful 2018 Romney run for Senate would lay the groundwork for a possible primary challenge to Trump in 2020.” Given that hasn’t made an accurate prediction, once in the past 15 years, maybe Romney won’t run at after all.[Note: This post was written by Matt Palumbo.
