If you’ve ever heard the term “regressive left” to describe the new brand of social justice oriented liberal insanity, you can thank Maajid Nawaz for coining the phrase. Nawaz is both a liberal and a Muslim, but you won’t hear the usual talking points that we hear from our politicians coming from him. He won’t tell you Islamic extremism has nothing to do with Islam, and he doesn’t refuse to use the phrase “radical Islamic terrorirsm.”He should know what’s he’s talking about too, as he used to be a member of the radical Hizb-ut-Tahrir, a group with membership of upwards of a million Muslims globally that calls for a Caliphate. He’s since renounced radicalism, and founded Quilliam, a think tank that aims to counter extremism and reverse radicalization.
Recently, Nawaz posted an article discussing the latest edition of the ISIS magazine Dabiq to his Facebook page. In particular, he highlighted an article in it titled, “Why We Hate You & Why We Fight You.” While it’s common to hear from liberal elites that Muslims wouldn’t hate us so much if we stopped bombing them (yeah — they want us to believe those who are cutting off heads wouldn’t be doing so if the U.S. just wasn’t so mean to them), ISIS denies as much.
Nawaz posted a link to that portion of the article, which prompted a detractor to comment. Nawaz’s response couldn’t be any more perfect.
As it turns out, ISIS members and former Islamists tend to know the motivations of terrorists better than some naive liberal sitting behind a computer screen.
