What’s one of the greatest benefits of being a federal agency of the Obama administration? The ability to grant yourself exemption from laws you don’t like or don’t feel like obeying. Case in point – the 1940 Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act.According to this piece of federal law if you or I “…take, possession, sale, purchase, barter, offer to sell, purchase or barter, transport, export or import, of any bald or golden eagle, alive or dead, including any part, nest, or egg,… “Take” includes pursue, shoot, shoot at, poison, wound, kill, capture, trap, collect, molest or disturb…” a bald or golden eagle we will be subject “…to a maximum fine of $5,000 or one year imprisonment with $10,000 or not more than two years in prison for a second conviction. Felony convictions carry a maximum fine of $250,000 or two years of imprisonment. The fine doubles for an organization.”
But there’s one organization exempt from this law: the Obama U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Because it’s about to declare itself exempt.I’ve previously reported on the civil war taking place on the left between the “Big Green” and “Save the (insert creature here)” liberal factions. One wants alternative fuels, including wind and solar, at any cost (and the costs are getting darned high). The other wants North America’s majestic raptors kept from being slaughtered by the same.
It’s an ongoing conundrum and one in which the Obama administration looks to be coming down on the side of Big Green. The Obama administration is likely to decide that killing off thousands more of our national symbols mid-flight is a price that must be paid for progress against its favorite boogeyman, global warming.
KUSA of Denver is reporting that the Obama administration via its Dept. of Fish and Wildlife is on the cusp of okaying the slaughter of thousands more bald and golden eagles. The Department is proposing increased permitting over the 1,000 eagles they can already (lawfully) kill every year in order to expand the taxpayer-dollar-sucking wind farms that are beginning to dominate the bird’s habitat. The proposed new permitting would raise the maximum number of golden eagles that may be legally killed to 2,000 and up the death ante to 6,000 bald eagles.
That’s 8,000 eagles our government is giving itself permission to kill annually without penalizing itself.
Dana Bove, who serves on the Board of Directors for the Boulder County Audubon Society, states the obvious when he cites the reason the Feds are seeking to increase the kill number is because of “The expansion of wind energy across the country.”The Fish and Wildlife Service did allow a public opinions input window which ended July 5. Ultimately however, it will be the federal government that decides whether or not the federal government can grant itself the authority to violate federal laws. We’ve seen that movie before.
And so the liberal’s battle with liberals wages on. I suppose the Obama administration’s thinking is, “What good is it to allow the eagles to live if the world is so hot it’s uninhabitable in a few years anyway? Better to let a few thousand more of them perish today in order to save the planet for the rest of us tomorrow.”
It’s the exact kind of logical gymnastics used to explain away all forms of lawlessness and malfeasance this White House engages in — up to and including again granting itself the ability to violate the very federal laws the rest of us must obey.[Note: This article was written by Derrick Wilburn]
