THIS city just passed new “soda tax”… are you affected?

Progressives believe, deep in the pit of their souls, that only a select chosen few — the elite — truly know what’s best for all of society, that grown adult individuals are not equipped to make certain decisions regarding their well-being on their own.

Nowhere is this more clearly seen than in big government nanny-state laws designed to control what people eat and drink.

The latest such example comes from the city of Philadelphia, where a new tax was passed on soda purchases.

The Free Beacon reports:

The Philadelphia City Council passed a soda tax of 1.5 cents per ounce on Thursday, CNN Money reported.

This would raise the cost of a can of soda by 18 cents, a six-pack by $1.08, a two-liter bottle by $1.02 and a 12-pack by $2.16.

According to CNN, the soda tax would be an extra cost on top of the 8 percent sales tax that already applies to soda.

“The new tax goes into effect on Jan. 1, 2017 and is estimated to raise $91 million a year,” explains the article. “That money will be used to fund pre-K expansion, community schools, reinvestment in parks and recreation centers, and add to the City’s General Fund. It will also fund tax credits that the council approved for retailers that sell “healthy” beverages.

According to Americans for Tax Reform, a taxpayer advocacy group, Hillary Clinton endorsed the soda tax even after she pledged to the American people that she would not raise taxes on anyone earning less than $250,000.

Bernie Sanders noted Clinton’s inconsistency on this policy saying, “Frankly, I am very surprised that Secretary Clinton would support this regressive tax after pledging not to raise taxes on anyone making less than $250,000.”

Somewhere — perhaps in the big white “house that slaves built” — Michelle Obama is beaming with pride, as liberals across the country are adopting the nanny-state mindset presented in her insane lunch rules program.

America is a nation built on freedom and liberty, on the ideal that grown adults are capable of making their own decisions about both the big and small things in life.

This is what has enabled us to be such a successful nation in the past, and it’s what will enable us to have a bright future, too.

Unfortunately, there are people in government positions who erroneously think we’re all too dumb to make the right choice ourselves. What’s worse is they believe it’s their duty to “fix” us when we don’t, not respecting our freedom of choice, our adulthood.

These sort of taxes do not accomplish the end goal of making people healthier. They just simply leave consumers frustrated.

The role of government is to protect the rights of the people, to defend their freedom of choice — not take it away.

If only we could return to that fundamental principle, things in America would be drastically different.
