In the wake of the horrific terrorist attack in Orlando on Sunday, liberals wasted zero time demanding the government pass more gun control legislation, a typical knee-jerk reaction we’ve all grown accustomed to over recent years. While it’s hardly surprising to hear of such calls from those on the left, what’s both shocking, and admittedly, infuriating, is when you hear Republicans who are supposed to be conservatives protecting the rights of their constituents, being “open” to gun control measures.
According to Steve Portnoy, Sen. Mitch McConnell is up for hearing “serious suggestions” about new gun control measures.
To say this is disappointing would be an understatement, though one can hardly claim to be surprised about the level of compromise coming from the GOP in general, and McConnell specifically, given it’s become somewhat of a habit for the Senate Majority Leader.
When folks runs as Republicans and claim to be a conservative, those voting them into office assume they will do their duty to uphold the Constitution and protect our rights from the bloated federal government that’s constantly working hard to shred both and seize power for a select few.
This is particularly true when it comes to the right to own a firearm. The Second Amendment was created in the wisdom of our Founders to allow us as citizens the right to possess the tools necessary to defend life, liberty, and property from criminals who wish to take that for which we have worked so hard. The term “criminals” includes big government tyranny too.
Unfortunately, there are many in Congress today who care more about their political careers than they do completing their duty to defend the rights of American citizens. One would think with the rise of Donald Trump, a phenomenon born out of the frustration the average American has with the current establishment in Washington, politicians would be a little wiser about doing the job they were elected to do.
Perhaps the lesson has not completely sunk in yet.
