After the second Super Tuesday, we’re essentially down to two candidates. Rubio dropped out following his loss in Florida, and Kasich mathematically can’t win the nomination.

A Trump vs. Hillary election is becoming inevitable as the gap between the delegate counts of Trump and Cruz widens. The only third-party candidate who showed any real interest in the election was Michael Bloomberg, but he decided against running as he feared he’d hand the election to Trump.

Three influential leaders of the conservative movement have summoned other top conservatives for a closed-door meeting Thursday in Washington, D.C., to talk about how to stop Donald Trump and, should he become the Republican nominee, how to run a third-party “true conservative” challenger in the fall.

The organizers of the meeting include Bill Wichterman, who was President George W. Bush’s liaison to the conservative movement; Bob Fischer, a South Dakota businessman and longtime conservative convener; and Erick Erickson, the outspoken Trump opponent and conservative activist who founded

Other GOP donors, who are interested in exploring the possibility of challenging Trump, recently commissioned a study on the feasibility of launching a last-minute, independent bid.

The last time we had a serious third-party candidate was during billionaire Ross Perot’s run against Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush — and he leeched off Bush’s base, handing Clinton the election. The evidence is pretty clear that third-party candidates win elections for Clintons.

Do we need to remind them that if they’re against Trump, they can still vote for Ted Cruz?
