Well, here we are. It’s Super Tuesday already. I personally have friends who are already sick of the campaign ads and coverage, and are particularly disgusted by the campaign trail shenanigans.Honestly, I put my head in my hands when I hear about short fingers, orange tans, sweating, choking and water bottles.
Forget Orwellian for a moment…our nation has become utterly Pavlovian, constantly rewarding bad behavior. Case in point, the latest poll produced by NBC/Survey Monkey (and I even wince thinking we now cite a company called “Survey Monkey” as even remotely credible).Politico says, Donald Trump heads into Super Tuesday with a massive lead over his Republican rivals, according to a national NBC News/SurveyMonkey poll released Tuesday.
Trump has 40 percent support among registered Republicans, nearly twice the support of second-place Marco Rubio, who sits at 21 percent. Ted Cruz is third at 18 percent, followed by Ben Carson at 8 percent and John Kasich at 7 percent.
After largely refraining from direct attacks on Trump, Rubio finally engaged the front-runner in last Thursday’s debate. The Florida senator’s support has jumped 5 percent in the past week, and Trump’s support has ticked up 4 percent. Meantime, Cruz has fallen 1 percent. There you go. Because Trump and Rubio have been sliding around the mud pit since the last debate, they’re both climbing in the polls.
We often say here that our enemies only understand one thing: strength. I suppose it is humans’ baser instincts that respond in such a way.
Unfortunately those baser instincts are currently on display in this election cycle. It’s one thing to see it from the media, it’s quite another to see it from the candidates themselves…But as long as the poll numbers keep rewarding this bad behavior, we’re going to get even more of it.
