Liberals have BAD NEWS for Texas BBQ

Y’all know I’m a Georgia boy, pure born and raised southern style, and attended the University of Tennessee. There were certain foods, which were true staples of the southern culinary way of life, and we pride ourselves on a good hearty breakfast. Now, another big time southern tradition is grilling — especially on college football Saturdays. And I know that’s not something just reserved to south of the Mason-Dixon line. This past Saturday after my morning 5-miler I was on the grill at 10:00 am because the Kansas State vs Texas game started at 11. And my standard is when folks show up, the meat is hot and ready to be eaten.

This past Saturday the grill menu was steak, bratwurst, Italian sausages, and to honor my Texas Longhorn guests, Earl Campbell sausages — damn good eatin’ folks. And yes, just to show my wide range of skills, I did Caribbean jerk chicken.

And now, thanks to the World Health Organization, my friends could sue me.

As reported by NBC News, “Processed meat, such as bacon or hot dogs, causes cancer, a World Health Organization group said in a long-awaited determination on Monday. The group said red meat, including beef, pork and lamb, probably causes cancer, too. Many studies show the links, both in populations of people and in tests that show how eating these foods can cause cancer, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) said in its report, released in the Lancet medical journal.

“These findings further support current public health recommendations to limit intake of meat,” Dr. Christopher Wild, who directs IARC, said in a statement. Most reports on the links between meat and cancer have been softened with some element of doubt, but the IARC uses clear and direct language in saying processed meat causes cancer. There are no phrases such as “may cause” in the report. “Overall, the Working Group classified consumption of processed meat as ‘carcinogenic to humans’ on the basis of sufficient evidence for colorectal cancer,” the report reads. “Additionally, a positive association with the consumption of processed meat was found for stomach cancer.

The Working Group classified consumption of red meat as ‘probably carcinogenic to humans’,” it added. “Consumption of red meat was also positively associated with pancreatic and with prostate cancer.”

So, what’a a guy supposed to do for college football Saturday grilling? I suppose the next time folks come over, they’ll get a nice helping of tofu and vegan kabobs. In all seriousness, what is up with the WHO? I ‘ve been eating grits, eggs, sausage, ham, and bacon all my life. And there’s nothing like a juicy grilled bratwurst or hot dog. So we’re supposed to give up a nice juicy grilled rib eye steak? I have one word for the World Health Organization: “nuts.”

There’s no way I’m going to give up Honey Baked Ham at Thanksgiving and Christmas…or for Sunday dinner. God gave us Five Guys and doggone, I like it, not every day mind you, but when I truly crave one, I’m gonna chow down.

I for one am sick of these folks who are dictating to us via fear mongering and intimidation what we should eat. This is what I do recommend folks — everything in moderation. Take care of yourselves and get your exercise done and have a balanced diet.

Sure seems this study is all about some liberal progressive agenda. What happens if all of a sudden government takes this study as justification to regulate what we eat — man, can you imagine First Lady Michelle Obama coming up with the football tailgate menu? Our kids hate the new school lunch menu — so what’s next?

Or will grocery stores be “fined” for selling meats deemed to be carcinogenic? Will the FDA all of a sudden demand all specified meats on the WHO list have certain labeling like cigarettes? Oh, here comes the big one, will there be increased taxes on these meats in order to deter their purchase? After all, big government would be doing it to save and protect us from ourselves. Laugh as you may, but think about the sugary drinks tax idea of former Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Folks, leave our tasty meats alone. I want to be able to enjoy a nice meal and if I like bacon with an egg on a flakey croissant that’s my choice. Then again, I suppose the only choice the progressive left likes is killing a baby. Well, I will continue to grill and eat those tasty Earl Campbell sausages. I love pulled pork and baby back ribs. And if you think I’m going to live in Texas and not eat brisket, you are certifiably insane.

What next, pickup trucks and hats are unhealthy?
