Wealthy Western nations the world over are being faced with an influx of Muslim refugees from wartorn poorer nations, but only one so far has taken a hardline stance…in terms of Christians. As ABC reports, “leaders in Australia want to restrict any intake of Syrian refugees to minorities which are largely Christian, as passions run high in the Coalition over the way Australia should handle the crisis in Syria.
Outgoing Prime Minister Tony Abbott was under increasing pressure to increase this year’s humanitarian intake of 13,750 people, but put off a decision while Australia consults with the United Nations about the best approach.
Abbott’s successor, Malcolm Turnbull, seems set to continue the same hardline, saying last week he was very concerned about the plight of Christian communities in Syria.
“They are a minority, they survived in Syria, they’ve been there for thousands of years, literally since the time of Christ,” he said.“But in an increasingly sectarian Middle East, you have to ask whether the, the gaps, the spaces that they were able to live and survive in will any longer be available.”
Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has nominated minorities like the Yazidis and one backbencher told the ABC the message being sent to the Prime Minister by some in the Coalition was clear: “No more Muslim men”.
Over the summer, then-Prime Minister Abbott was faced with over 8,000 Muslim Rohingya refugees trying to resettle in Australia. After a week long standoff they were rerouted to Indonesia and Malaysia. At the time, Abbot said, “Nope, nope, nope. Australia will do absolutely nothing that gives any encouragement to anyone to think that they can get on a boat, that they can work with people smugglers to start a new life.
“I’m sorry. If you want to start a new life, you come through the front door, not through the back door.
“Don’t think that getting on a leaky boat at the behest of a people smuggler is going to do you or your family any good.
He’s exactly right…and that’s exactly what we’ve seen happen on our own shores and abroad. If you offer it, they will come.
“Don’t think that getting on a leaky boat at the behest of a people smuggler is going to do you or your family any good.“We are not going to do anything that will encourage people to get on boats. If we do the slightest thing to encourage people to get on the boats, this problem will get worse, not better.”
Nonetheless, however “humanitarian” the West desires to be, there are disturbing questions about why so many young Muslim men of military age are fleeing their own countries to settle in the predominately Christian nations.
As Col. West wrote earlier today, why not just take in the elderly, women and children? More and more, it appears we are taking in a Trojan Horse.
