As the nation reels over yet another one of our nation’s police officers being shot in cold blood, we get a chance to see what true leadership looks like. And what it doesn’t.After learning of sheriff Deputy Darren Goforth’s unprovoked, execution-style murder on Friday as he was pumping gas, Americans are grieving, frightened and angry. They’re craving leadership; you see it in the comments on this very Facebook page.
This morning, Texas Governor Greg Abbott addressed this profound shock and grief by ordering state flags lowered to half-staff and making a statement calling Deputy Goforth’s murder what it is: a “deliberate and heinous crime.”
As reported by Houston ABC News affiliate:
Gov. Greg Abbott has ordered Texas flags in Harris County and at the Capitol to be lowered to half-staff to honor a slain law enforcement officer.Harris County sheriff’s Deputy Darren Goforth was fatally shot Friday night in an unprovoked attack while refueling his patrol car at a gas station.
Investigators later arrested a suspect, Shannon J. Miles of Houston, on a capital murder charge.
Abbott, in a statement Monday, said Texas has sustained a “deliberate and heinous crime” against a law enforcement officer in Harris County. The governor says Texans revere the men and women in law enforcement who put their lives on the line every day to protect and service their communities. This symbolic move by Governor Abbott goes a long way in telling the people of his state — and our nation — yes, this is a big, horrific deal and your leadership shares your grief and anger over what’s happened. WE will figure this out together.
Meanwhile, there’s been a deafening silence from President Barack Obama. This, the same president who issued a public statement just days after the shooting of Michael Brown, the 18-year-old black man who was shot and killed by police officer Darren Wilson. In it, he both expressed condolences and promised action from the Department of Justice. Attorney General Eric Holder, likewise, issued a statement calling for “fulsome review” and pointing out that “aggressively pursuing investigations such as this is critical for preserving trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve.”
But we’ve heard nary a peep from President Obama or his administration on the brutal execution of Deputy Darren Goforth.
Meanwhile, as Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued his order to lower flags at half-staff, the White House did make one “important” announcement this morning. As reported by CNN:
While on his three-day trip to Alaska — aimed at promoting climate change action — President Barack Obama will tape an episode of “Running Wild with Bear Grylls,” NBC and the White House announced Monday.
The President will “trek through the wilderness” with survival expert Grylls, in the special edition of the show, set to air later this year according to a press release.
Celebrities including Kate Winslet, Channing Tatum and Drew Brees have participated in the show featuring one-on-one adventures.
Yep, that’s right folks, though our president can’t seem to be bothered to comment on the horrific murder of one of our men in blue, he wants to make sure we know he’s going on a REALITY TV show! No, this is not a joke — though it really is sadly laughable — you can’t make this stuff up.
In fact, by doing so, President Obama can rack up yet another “first” to his name: he’ll be the first president ever to go on a reality TV show. Right on up there with first president to sign an agreement with the world’s largest state sponsor of terrorism and reopen the American embassy in Cuba. Bravo, President Obama!
As we’ve written, President Obama’s choice of when to comment and when to stay silent speaks volumes — not about what’s important to our nation, but what’s important to HIS agenda. Black man shot by police officer fits his agenda, while white cop shot by black man does not. Being a leader to our nation in times of distress and division appears not to be part of this president’s agenda. So it’s no wonder the state of fracture our nation is in today.
January 2017 just can’t get here fast enough.
