There is a warrior spirit, an ethos, which is relentless and does not cower. It is a spirit evidenced in the Marine Corps from such men as General O P Smith who was famous for once saying “Sir, we are surrounded. Excellent! We can attack in any direction” while besieged by the Chinese in Korea. And I will once again share with you the quote attributed to Alexander the Great: “I am not afraid of an army of lions led by a sheep; I am afraid of an army of sheep led by a lion.” Sadly in the face of the Islamic terror attack in Chattanooga last week, we truly find lambs leading lions.
As reported by the Military Times, “The military services have taken swift action to increase security after Thursday’s shootings in Tennessee, even closing some facilities and telling Marine recruiters not to wear uniforms in public.
Defense Secretary Ash Cater approved immediate steps taken by the military branches to increase security and has told the services to get back to him by the end of next week with additional force protection measures, Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook said in a statement on Friday.
The steps were taken just a day after a gunman attacked two military facilities in Chattanooga, leaving four Marines and one sailor dead. Suspected gunman Mohammad Youssef Abdulazeez was killed in the attacks on a joint-service recruiting station and a nearby Navy Operational Support Center. One of the steps Carter approved was Marine Corps Recruiting Command’s decision to have recruiters not wear their military uniforms for now, a defense official said. The recruiting command also closed down all offices within 40 miles of the facilities in Chattanooga and increased the force protection condition level from “Bravo” to “Charlie.” “Charlie” is the third highest security level. It indicates an incident has occurred or officials have evidence that terrorists are planning an attack.”
Yesterday I brought you the ludicrous response of Army Chief of Staff General Ray Odierno that we do not need to rush and “over arm” ourselves. He showed more concern about “accidental discharges” than showing the Islamic jihadists here in America, as former Army Chief of Staff General Gordon Sullivan said when he was my Division Commander of the First Infantry, “if you want to pick a fight, you came to the right place.”
Now, THAT is the spirit of the American warrior. That is a lion leading lions. Instead we’re telling Marines to not wear their uniforms? It is the Marine uniform, of the Devil Dogs of Belleau Woods, which has instilled fear into the hearts of enemies over its long existence. Now we have lambs turning these fierce men and women into cuddly puppies. Close down recruiting facilities within 40 miles? Hell no, they should be open, the recruiters provided the guidance to be armed — not everyone, but selected senior members on a rotational basis — and the clarion call should go out, “Join the Few, the Proud, and let’s take the fight to this enemy.”
You see, that’s what a lion would say, but sadly we’ve elevated lambs in certain positions. How does a secretary of defense stomach such cowardice — maybe because he approves? We have yet to have the flag lowered to half-mast in honor of these Marines and Sailor. And trust me, the enemy is watching the reaction. If I were the secretary of defense, certainly as president, I would have unleashed every single US Marine F/A-18 fighter pilot on Raqqa, Syria for as long as they wanted to bomb those bastards. I wouldn’t have a single concern about collateral damage and wouldn’t care a doggone what the liberal progressive limp-wristed leftists would say.
This would be about sending a message to ensure that any Islamic jihadists in America knew they didn’t have anyone to chat with on social media. I sure as heck wouldn’t tell Marines NOT to wear their uniform. I would have told every living Marine to put on their uniforms and go to a recruiting station. The order would have been issued for commanders to develop a plan to authorize selected members to carry weapons to defend their stations and reserve centers. I would not have done as Governor Rick Scott did in Florida, which was to shut down Army National Guard recruiting stations and move them to Guard Armory facilities.Look, where are the American leaders who would never cower before the enemy? Where are the leaders such as Lieutenant General Lewis “Chesty” Puller who held on Guadacanal? Where are the leaders such as Brigadier General McAuliffe who responded to the Nazi German request to surrender at Bastogne with the simple word, “Nuts”?
I find it unconscionable and I am incredulous that we’ve ordered Marines not to wear their uniforms. Am I the only one who realizes the propaganda tool we have just provided these 7th century savage barbarians? To them we seem cowards in not attacking them over there — and here in America, when attacked, we try to dismiss the motive as “depression” and run in fear by ordering warriors not to wear their uniforms. Back in the day there was a word to describe how we must look — that word rhymes with wussies. Here we are lifting bans on transgendered troops but closing recruiting stations and telling Marines not to wear their uniforms.
My mom was a civilian employee at the 6th US Marine Corps District Headquarters in Atlanta. My older brother was a Marine infantryman in Vietnam. I remember when my older brother came home from Vietnam, he was made ashamed to wear his uniform. Damned if the same liberal progressive leftists are doing the same thing — trying to shame our warriors from donning that which separates them from civilians, their uniform of service to this nation.
