So here we are about to celebrate our 239th American Independence Day. What a great country — a constitutional republic entrusted to we the people. But a funny thing happened on the way to the store. It seems that the ‘Hope and Change’ generation doesn’t like this “fundamentally transformed” America for which they had been so giddy. As reported over at Breitbart.com:
A new poll from TransferWise shows that 35 percent of those born in the United States would consider ditching their home country to live elsewhere; that number skyrockets among those aged 18-34, the so-called millennials, 55 percent of whom said they would think of taking off if given the chance.
Most of those millennials cite economics as a chief factor in their desire to leave: 43 percent of men and 38 percent of women said they’d leave if they could get paid more in another country.
The rationales for staying in America, articulated by Americans, are particularly weak: 59 percent say they would stay because “it is home,” another 58 percent say they would stay thanks to romantic and family ties – and then the stats drop precipitously, with just 22 percent stating they would stay for the democratic society, 17 percent for the culture, 10 percent for the good future for children, 5 percent for wealth, 3 percent for low crime, and 2 percent for low taxes.I remember being a young strapping American Airborne officer in 1985 and taking my first trip through Checkpoint Charlie — sadly, since the National Education Association and American Federation of Teachers have taken over education, most kids won’t have a clue — and I saw why I loved America. I saw nothing but ruin and despair on the faces East Berliners.
I was 24 years old, and it was a life changing event for me. At that very moment I came to understand liberty and tyranny. We were in the department stores and noticed there weren’t a lot of folks in them shopping. We looked at the horrible conditions of the streets. And there was only one type of car — it came in two- and four-door models and only three colors. Yes, it had that much of an impact on me. Due to the status of forces agreement, we members of the American military were allowed to travel through that small opening; for me, it was going back in time, bullet holes still in buildings. And, of course, we were followed and monitored.
But you know what was most telling? The antennas on the homes were pointed toward West Berlin. It never ceases to amaze me how those who’ve never seen the REAL opposite of freedom so carelessly castigate it as bad. I remember as a battalion commander having soldiers in my unit that’d never traveled out of the United States — one look at Iraq, yep, God bless the USA. Even closer to home, our girls had their first church mission trip to Nicaragua, and boy howdy were they glad to be back — you know, life’s simple pleasures like clean running water. And even when they went to China for three weeks with our exchange student Wangying Lin, they had a good time but again, God bless the USA!So what are we teaching our kids that they want to check out from America? First of all, is ‘Hope and Change’ not working for them? As the Breitbart piece by Ben Shapiro states:
Barack Obama’s America doesn’t attract people who want to stay in America because Barack Obama’s vision of America does not include America staying in America. America used to have a definition as a nation. We used to have a common history, a common set of values, a common language, and a common culture. All of those elements create social capital – the ties that bind us together, that allow us to trust one another in the absence of compulsion. But guess what?
That won’t stop them from voting for more of the same. A YouGov poll from February showed 55 percent of millennials trending in favor of Hillary Clinton. The same number, according to Harvard University’s Institute of Politics, want Democrats — meaning liberal progressives — to stay in the White House.
You know what? I like the America that Buck and Snooks West taught me to love, honor and respect. I like the America I swore to defend and protect our fundamental construct — our rule of law, the U.S. Constitution. Strangely, we’re living in a time when folks believe they can rewrite that standard and, in turn, alter our fundamental culture.
So I’ll be enjoying our 239th Independence Day of the America I’ve left in order to defend — never to abandon. And I can bet y’all something, these little rascals may talk about leaving America, but they never will! Because only in America are we tolerant of chuckleheads.
