What happened at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, is tragic — the result of a sick, demented mind — and potentially a lack of proper parental supervision. But sadly, there was something that occurred yesterday, which was even more disturbing. As reported at Breaking911.com:
South Carolina State House Minority Leader Rep. J. Todd Rutherford (D) stated speaking on CNN:
“South Carolina is one of five states that does not have a hate crimes law. South Carolina is still the only state that I am aware of that still flies a Confederate flag in front of the State House dome. South Carolina represents, and is emblematic of the problem, which is words that come from these networks that broadcast what they call news, but it’s not. It’s really hate speech and coded language, and leads people to believe that they can walk into a church, because it’s no longer a house of God, it’s a killing ground. He hears that, because he watches the news, and he watches things like Fox News, where they talk about things that they call news, but they’re really not.
They use that coded language, they use hate speech, they talk about the president as if he’s not the president. They talk about church-goers as if they’re really not church-goers. And that’s what this young man acted on.”
In all fairness, State Representative Rutherford, who’s obviously and understandably distraught, was given an opportunity on Fox News’ The O’Reilly Factor to retract his statements or better explain — instead he doubled down!
This isn’t at all helpful and just demonstrates political opportunism. We saw the same after the horrible shooting of former U.S. Congresswoman Gabby Giffords; conservative media was blamed, despite the truth. The reaction of generalizing and attempting to cast blame, instead of focusing on the individual, does not promote healing in this situation. State Rep. Rutherford’s his ill-conceived diatribe — stated not just once, but subsequently reiterated — only exacerbates America’s racial division.
When white police officers are killed by blacks, is it MSNBC’s fault? Or maybe rap musicians are to blame? Evil walks amongst us and that’s exactly what removed its veil and displayed itself — the devil entered the House of God and enacted a savage attack. It’s not the result of any news media outlet. If anything, it’s the result of our declining culture.
