Democrat says it’s “open season on black men” — he couldn’t be more wrong

Democrat Representative Hank Johnson apparently wants Congress to extend its tentacles down into your local police departments. After worrying that a planned military build up on Guam might capsize the island, and picking on Republicans who wanted to take a day to study legislation about helium — which Johnson said would cause an ” injustice of there being no helium for comedians to get that high-pitched voice that we all hold near and dear to our hearts,” now Johnson has moved on to the perceived racial injustice of police shooting black men. I guess he’s not worried about the white guys, or the Asians, or the Native Americans or the Hispanics who got shot.

As The Hill reports, “Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) lamented Monday that recent deaths of unarmed African-American men at the hands of police officers make it feel like “open season” on members of his race.”

“Johnson, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, spoke on the House floor for the first time since the controversial shooting of Walter Scott in North Charleston, S.C., earlier this month. The police officer involved, Michael Slager, has been charged with murder.”

“It feels like open season on black men in America, and I’m outraged,” Johnson said.

Actually, Johnson might want to check his facts first. Here’s what we found out with a simple Google search:

“According to the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics, the rate of black officers who kill black felons is 32 per 100,000 black officers, which is more than twice the rate of white officers who kill black felons – 14 per 100,000 white officers.”

“Black officers account for a little more than 10 percent of all fatal police shootings. Of those they kill, though, 78 percent were black.”

“White officers killed 91 percent of the whites who died at the hands of police” — hardly a statistic that would show up if white officers were out all day looking for a black person to shoot. It’s probably safe to assume most police departments still employ a majority of white officers, so naturally, white officers will be involved in more shootings than other officers.

If Representative Johnson really wants to help he could sponsor legislation that would make it mandatory for law enforcement agencies to provide details to the FBI concerning all these encounters. As of now, “There is no national database that police departments are required to submit a record to when they complete an investigation after a police officer shoots a civilian.”

Ask Officer Darren Johnson. He probably feels like it’s open season on white police after being accused of every possible wrong doing, resigning his position for fear of harm to his fellow officers, and having to put his family in hiding. It goes both ways, Mr. Johnson.
