Handy guide for liberals in the BDS movement: 5 things to boycott

Iran’s leaders have reiterated their pledge to destroy Israel. The charter of Hamas calls for the destruction of Israel and says in Article Seven: “Muslims will fight the Jews (and kill them); until the Jews hide behind rocks and trees, which will cry: O Muslim! there is a Jew hiding behind me, come on and kill him!”

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pledges to protect his nation from destruction. And yet ISRAEL, that tiny sliver of land with a population basically a tenth of the size of Egypt or Iran is the Evil Empire — so much so that the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel is spreading around the globe like wildfire.

On the campus of California State University at Fullerton, a discussion of BDS was part of events scheduled during women’s history month. Last week, a discussion on the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, otherwise known as the BDS movement, was held by coalition of Women’s Gender and Studies and Students for Justice in Palestine to raise awareness of the BDS movement.

BDS groups are dedicated to promoting nonviolent pressure toward Israel by boycotting university and cultural institutions that falsely promote “soft” images, when in reality they’re engaging in violent acts with Palestinians, guest lecturer, Professor David Lloyd said.

Is Professor Lloyd aware of any violent acts perpetuated by Palestinians against Israel? Apparently not.

Across the pond, according to the European Jewish Press, students at the London School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), one of Britain’s top universities, voted in a referendum to support the boycott of Israeli academic institutions. The proposal passed with a 73 % majority.

But while the BDS movement brings protests against the Israeli institutions designed to punish the government, it is also bringing with it the odious stench of anti-Semitism.

Fox reports At UCLA last month, during a confirmation hearing for the student council’s judicial board, candidate Rachel Beyda, was asked, “Given that you are a Jewish student and very active in the Jewish community, how do you see yourself being able to maintain an unbiased view?”

“For the next 40 minutes, after Ms. Beyda was dispatched from the room, the council tangled in a debate about whether her faith and affiliation with Jewish organizations, including her sorority and Hillel, a popular student group, meant she would be biased in dealing with sensitive governance questions that come before the board.”

The council voted first to reject Ms. Beyda’s nomination, with four members against her. Then, at the prodding of a faculty adviser there who pointed out that belonging to Jewish organizations was not a conflict of interest, the students revisited the question and unanimously put her on the board.”

Can you imagine if the same questions were asked of a gay or black candidate?

A few hundred miles up the road in California, Jewish students at the University of California Davis were heckled with shouts of “Allahu Akbar” last month during a vote on a resolution endorsing divestment.

And across the globe, the heckling is becoming more ominous. Haaretz reports “Protesters chanted anti-Semitic slogans and threatened to kill Jews outside a South African Zionist Federation event in Johannesburg on Sunday. “You think this is Israel, we are going to kill you!” and “You Jews do not belong here in South Africa!” supporters of the BDS movement shouted in front of the Sandton Convention Centre, where the South Africa-Israel Expo and a federation conference was being held. They were joined by protesters in African National Congress and South African Communist Party T-shirts.”

But I’d like to end this on a light note. As promised, here’s a handy guide for all of those folks who support the BDS movement, with a little anti-Semitism thrown in. If you’re going to boycott Israel, you might as well go “whole hog” and boycott Jews!

You might have seen this list of the many medical advancements developed by Jews, but I thought I’d supplement it with a few things lefties might relate to.

1. Avoid barcode scanners and DVD players – it was Jewish American physicist Theodore Maiman who successfully fired the first laser.

2. If your heart stops at the airport, better not use one of those defibrillators or get a pacemaker installed afterwards. Jewish American cardiologist Paul Zoll was one of the pioneers in those technologies.

3. Love those stainless steel appliances? Oh no. German Jewish chemist Hans Goldschmidt developed the process by which carbon-free chromium could be produced in 1893.

4. Any movie with Steven Spielberg’s name on it. Duh.

5. And finally, stop using Google!!! It was invented by two Jews, Larry Page and Sergey Brin.
