I was taught in the military that the first quality of a leader is courage. In other words, a courageous leader knows how to identify problems and develop viable solutions. A courageous leader meets challenges head on and never takes credit for success – but always takes responsibility. Courageous leaders can instill confidence in others without uttering a word — their mere presence produces courage in those in their sphere of influence. Courageous leaders know who the enemy is and never cower away from a fight. They have the spirit of the lion, not the sheep. After the brilliant Academy Award worthy performance Tuesday night in his State of the Union address, it’s painfully clear President Obama excels in the role of defiant chief executive, but certainly not as a courageous leader, particularly when it comes to standing up against a potential nuclear Iran.
So House Speaker John Boehner was left with no other recourse. Without a true leader in the White House, he took the lead, and invited the Prime Minister of Israel, Benyamin Netanyahu, to address the U.S. Congress and the American people about the threat from Iran “in a sharp rebuke to President Obama” as Fox News puts it.
“Such invitations typically are coordinated with the White House and State Department, but this one was not. The House speaker’s office said Netanyahu will be invited to speak Feb. 11 before a joint session of Congress.”
“The invitation comes as lawmakers weigh legislation, supported by Republicans and some Democrats, to tee up more sanctions against Iran in case negotiations fail to curtail the country’s nuclear enrichment program.”I’m rather amused that the Obama White House is throwing a hissy fit. After all, no one said a thing last week when it was revealed U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron had taken it upon himself to call members of the U.S. Senate to pressure them into not supporting sanctions against Iran. So why all the stink about Netanyahu?
Well, that answer is simple — no one went to President Obama and asked, “Mother, may I?” But consider this blatant hypocrisy: if Obama wants to release GITMO Islamic terrorists — or even Islamic jihadists serving time in U.S. prisons — who does he ask or even inform in the legislative branch?
On Tuesday night during his State of the Union Address, President Obama refused to acknowledge the enemy and was the first POTUS since 2001 not to mention the name al-Qaida – after all, they’ve been decimated and are on the run, right?“Obama vowed Tuesday during his State of the Union address to veto any such legislation (sanctions against Iran). But Boehner signaled he wants Netanyahu to explain the stakes of the debate, as he pledged to press ahead with the legislation.”
In the absence of courageous leadership that can instill confidence, let alone ID our enemies, Speaker Boehner went elsewhere. How could Obama state that “the shadow of crisis has passed away?” Is he unaware the United States has three Navy warships off the coast of Yemen, preparing to evacuate the embassy?“Prime Minister Netanyahu is a great friend of our country, and this invitation carries with it our unwavering commitment to the security and well-being of his people,” Boehner said in a statement. “In this time of challenge, I am asking the prime minister to address Congress on the grave threats radical Islam and Iran pose to our security and way of life.”
“Fox reports, “Asked about the invite, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest described it as a breach of typical protocol since the White House wasn’t involved. But he said the administration would reserve judgment until they speak with the Israelis.”
Consider the breach of protocol shown to Netanyahu when he was abandoned at a White House meeting and exited out the back door. Or how about the “off-mike” moment with former French President Nicolas Sarkozy? Or how about Hamas — yep, that kind group of Islamic humanitarians — Nancy Pelosi said so — that the Obama administration has promised millions of dollars to that just praised the Palestinian attacker who stabbed several Jewish citizens in Jerusalem yesterday?
I think you get my point. No one cares about the feigned offense being exhibited by the Obama administration. They’ve dished out quite a bit of disregard and breach of protocol themselves, especially when it comes to our Constitution.
“Critics of Obama and his foreign policy say the president has failed to keep close ties to Israel, a long-time U.S. ally and a key country in providing Middle East stability. Among their concerns is that the Obama administration has not done enough to curb Iran’s suspected pursuit of a nuclear weapon.”
And no, the 10,000 Iranian centrifuges have not stopped spinning and enriching uranium in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
“If Netanyahu accepts the invitation, it would be his third appearance before a joint session of Congress and his second during Boehner’s speakership. His previous addresses were in July 1996 and May 2011. Other Israeli prime ministers to address Congress include Ehud Olmert, Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin, according to Boehner’s office.”
I say it truly is time for a fourth Netanyahu opportunity to address the American people. Having met him during a Congressional delegation visit, I can tell you he truly is an impressive leader. And we kinda need a reminder of what leadership looks like.
