What I wish Obama would learn from Israel (not holding my breath)

I wish our government would take note: when it comes to sovereign protection of its citizens, Israel talks less and acts more. Israeli leaders don’t speak of “red lines” and hopefully they learned the lesson from recent combat operations to understand that limited ops yield limited results — and actually embolden the enemy.

As the Washington Post reports, “Israeli warplanes and rockets struck nine targets in Syria early Monday in retaliation for a missile attack from Syria on Sunday that killed an Israeli teenager and wounded his father along the border in the Golan Heights.

A spokesman for the Israeli Defense Forces said Monday that Israel fired guided missiles from the ground and rockets from the air that hit sites in Syria, including a military command headquarters.”

Someone has to take a leadership role against Islamic terrorism, since the U.S. clearly won’t.

On Sunday, the Israeli teenager was killed and two other civilians were injured in what the Israeli military called an intentional cross-border attack from Syria into the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights.

“This is a very severe event and marks another step in deterioration on the border with Syria,” said Eyal Ben Reuven, a former deputy head of the Israeli army’s northern command.

If you consider the regional situation facing Israel, it is truly bleak and the Obama administration has turned its back on our best ally in the region. Israel finds itself in the jihadist dream neighborhood — Hezbollah, Hamas, Islamic Jihad, instability in Syria and a highly threatening Islamist army in ISIS.

Jordan knows that ISIS has it targeted as ISIS has secured the border crossings on the Iraqi side and is actively recruiting in Jordan. Al-Qaida-aligned forces are occupying the Sinai and capable of launching attacks into Israel — and Obama talks about “whacking moles.”

When I sat in Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s cabinet room in August 2011 as part of a congressional delegation, he warned us of “zeroing out” our troop presence in Iraq and creating a vacuum. He knew exactly what would come of that misstep — and here we are, with a far more dangerous security situation for Israel. And by the way, I don’t believe we’ve heard any reports of Obama calling Netanyahu and pledging utmost support, do you?

Hope and change? Israel was hoping we’d change presidents in 2012.
