Echoes of the past: will gun registration in Conn. lead to confiscation?

Liberal progressives seem hell-bent on ignoring the Second Amendment statement, “the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.”New York Governor Cuomo has certainly made his sentiments known in rejecting those who believe in the Second Amendment. Now it seems his neighbor northeastern state, Connecticut, is taking that sentiment to another level.

In January in Connecticut, it became illegal for citizens to own semi-automatic rifles or high-capacity magazines without having them registered with the state. Applications for gun registration had to be submitted by January 3rd. Owning an unregistered semi-automatic rifle or high-capacity magazine that was legal prior to January 3 is now a class D felony under the new law.

However tens of thousands of defiant gun owners chose not to register their rifles, and now the state is taking some action.

According to a report in The Blaze, Officials are reportedly notifying gun owners who submitted late applications that they have one last chance to get rid of their “illegal” weapons.” It seems that a draft notification is being prepared for Connecticut citizens who are practicing civil disobedience in response to a gun control law they see as being hastily passed and unconstitutional. However, The Blaze reports not a single letter has been sent out so far.

Gun owners who actually tried to register their guns and magazines, intentionally late or not, are now on the state’s radar for owning guns that became illegal overnight. It’s unclear if the state plans to start prosecuting gun owners who don’t dispose of their semi-automatic rifles or high-capacity magazines — or if they have a plan for checking if the late applicants comply with the warning.

We all know the tragedy of the Newtown Connecticut shooting resulted in the deaths of many American children. But for lawmakers to make laws against law-abiding citizens is not a responsible legislative action, it is tyranny.

Instead of seeking to ensure and guarantee that mentally ill or those with mentally ill individuals in their households have no access to firearms, the politicians in Connecticut sought the low-hanging ideological fruit — banning previously legal firearms and magazines.

Can you imagine going to bed one night and then waking to find out that you now possess something illegal that was just legal when you put your head to pillow? In this upside down world of progressive socialists, marijuana should be legalized — my position would be to decriminalize it — but legal, lawful firearms in the hands of law-abiding citizens are illegal. As former White House Chief of Staff and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel states, “never let a good crisis go to waste.”

Do you agree with the civil disobedience of gun owners? Is the action of the Connecticut lawmakers constitutional? Is this the petri dish effect and will we soon see this in other liberal states?
