Senate Republicans, lead by Senator Jeff Sessions, R-Ala were unsuccessful today in their effort to halt cuts to military veteran pensions. A provision in the already House-passed bill would cut retirement benefits for military retirees by $6 billion over 10 years. As a viable alternative to the retirement cuts, Sen. Sessions wanted to instead eliminate an estimated $4.2 billion in annual spending by reining in an IRS credit that illegal immigrants have claimed.
It appears the illegal immigrants are getting better treatment than our veterans.
We’ve been sounding the alarm on these cuts ever since the first alert email from the Military Offices Association of America. This one percent cut to military retiree and medically-retired military COLA may seem minuscule to the well-paid members of the House and Senate who earn their Congressional retirement after serving only five years as opposed to 20 years for our military. But depending on retirement rank, the cuts mean a loss of $77,000 to $120,000 to military retirees after a minimum of two decades of selfless service.
It is unconscionable that these so called “lawmakers” in Washington DC cannot find $6 billion in budget savings without targeting those who have already sacrificed — especially after Senator Tom Coburn (R-Ok) released his government “waste book” that outlined $33 billion in wasteful spending. As Fox News reported:
“It’s not correct, and it should not happen,” Sessions said, “By blocking my amendment, they voted to cut pensions for wounded warriors. Senators in this chamber have many valid ideas for replacing these pension cuts, including my proposal to close the tax welfare loophole for illegal filers, and all deserved a fair and open hearing. But they were denied.”
I’m not surprised Senate Democrats prefer tax credits for illegal immigrants over military retirement benefits. But to see some Republicans accepting this position, and for it to have passed the House of Representatives is even more disturbing.Where are the representatives for those who have served? The mid-term elections are coming, and for those who turned their backs on the military, you shall indeed reap what you have sown.
