We reported last week how Senate Democrats blocked a bill to crack down on so-called sanctuary cities — cities that provide sanctuary to illegal aliens, keeping them out of the grasp of the federal government’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
In blocking the bill — also known as Kate’s Law — Senate Democrats essentially said they CONDONE cities that refuse to abide by federal law, and furthermore, openly and actively refuse to cooperate with federal authorities. This completely illogical notion makes perfect sense — using liberal logic. As a result, untold numbers of criminal illegal aliens will continue to roam the streets of American cities, free to commit crimes against citizens like Kate Steinle, who was murdered last summer on the streets of San Francisco by a criminal illegal alien.
Now, in the wake of the Senate’s failure to stand up for both the rule of law and the safety of our citizens, Texas Governor Greg Abbott is taking matters into his own hands. The governor declared today, in no uncertain terms, that sanctuary policies will no longer be tolerated in HIS state. In other words, Texas will be applying the rule of LAW to illegal aliens. Imagine that!
As Breitbart reports:
Texas Governor Greg Abbott admonished Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez over her recent decision to consider honoring immigration detainers on a “case-by-case” basis. The governor said sanctuary city policies like this will “no longer be tolerated in Texas.”Governor Abbott wrote the tersely worded letter to Sheriff Valdez after her decision announced earlier this month to scale back on honoring immigration detainers sent to her jail by the federal government’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Her announcement was reported by Breitbart Texas on October 12. “’Sanctuary City’ policies like those promoted by your recent decision to implement your own case-by-case immigrant detention plan will no longer be tolerated in Texas,” Abbott began in his letter. “Your decision to not fully honor U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) requests to detain criminal immigrants poses a serious danger to Texans. These detainers provide ICE with the critical notice and time it needs to take incarcerated immigrants into federal custody.”
In her defense, Sheriff Valdez told Dallas Morning News reporters, “We can’t base our decisions on who is going to get upset with us. We have to base our decisions on what is best for the whole.” Ms. Valdez didn’t explain exactly how releasing criminal illegal aliens into the community — before ICE is able to determine whether there are grounds for detention or deportation — is “best” for the whole. It certainly would not seem to make her community safer, so one can only wonder on what measure her proposal is better.
Here’s a crazy idea, Sheriff Valdez: how about basing your decisions on the rule of LAW? If you asked me, that’s shouldn’t be a difficult concept for a sheriff to understand. Nonetheless, Gov. Abbott explained to Ms. Valdez thus:
“Your refusal to fully participate in a federal law enforcement program intended to keep dangerous criminals off the streets leaves the State no choice but to take whatever actions are necessary to protect our fellow Texans,” Abbott continued. “Now more than ever, it is essential that state, federal, and local law enforcement work collaboratively to protect our fellow Texans and to ensure that our laws are upheld, not disregarded.”
It just makes too much sense — we must uphold our laws fully, rather than disregard them. The law is the law is the law — not just on a “case-by-case basis.”
And rather than issuing empty proclamations, Gov. Abbott went so far as to lay out specific actions he and the state of Texas can take to rein in the likes of this renegade sheriff, including:
•Passing laws that prohibit any policy or action that promotes sanctuary to people in this state illegally.
•Enacting laws that make it illegal for a Sheriff’s Department to not honor a federal immigration detainer request.
•Evaluating the extent to which local taxpayers should foot the bill for local decisions that increase costs for Texas’ health and education systems.
•Amending the Tort Claims Act to ensure counties are fully financially responsible for the actions of any illegal immigrants who are released because the county’s Sheriff failed to honor an ICE detainer request.
Once again, we have to applaud Gov. Abbott for leading the charge to stand up for the rule of law, the safety of our citizens — and just plain common sense. We can only hope more governors follow his lead.
What kind of world do we live in where Congress (and our president) refuses to stand up for our nation’s rule of law? And yet, on the other hand, they insist that state and local governments abide by so-called “laws” fabricated by five judges in black robes?
It all makes my head hurt.
