Just when you’d gotten used to dropping the word “presumptive” when referring to Donald Trump as the GOP nominee for president, now this. Reports are swirling this morning that Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus is “furious” with Donald Trump — and, moreover, senior GOP officials are “actively exploring” how to replace Trump on the ticket if he were to drop out.
As The Daily Caller reports:
Priebus has had multiple discussions with Trump in the past few days telling him that he needs to get back on message. On Tuesday, Trump refused to endorse Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and Arizona Sen. John McCain in their respective primaries.
“I am told that senior officials at the party are actively exploring what would happen if Trump dropped out. How to replace him on the ballot,” ABC’s Jon Karl said on Good Morning America. “They can’t force him out, he would have to go out voluntarily. And then it would be the 168 members of the RNC through a complicated process they would pick a new candidate.”
“They are so unable to control his message, they just don’t know, they clearly think it is a possibility,” Karl added.
The idea that the party ever thought for one moment that they could “control” Trump’s message is just a fresh reminder of how out of touch with reality the party really is. To be sure, even many Trump supporters wish Trump and his campaign would stay on point in touting his plans, while systematically exposing opponent Hillary Clinton on any number of fronts. But Trump’s refusal to simply toe the party line without question is, indeed, one of the primary reasons for Trump’s continued success. When is the party establishment going to learn that what they’ve been pushing just ain’t selling these days?
And here’s another newsflash for the party leaders: somehow, don’t see Trump ‘dropping out’ in this lifetime.[Note: This article was written by Michelle Jesse, Associate Editor]
