As we’ve been reporting here, it’s been a rough week between the Obama administration and its newly-minted (and we do mean minted) BFF, Iran.
As the Washington Times sums up, a pair of dangerously close encounters between the Iranian and U.S. navies in the Persian Gulf this week have raised fresh concerns about just what Iran is thinking:
Iran’s military is going to “warn” and “confront” any foreign ships entering its territorial waters, the nation’s top defense official said Thursday, after four Iranian fast-attack craft buzzed the guided-missile destroyer USS Nitze in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, and the USS Squall, a coastal patrol ship, fired three warning shots a day later to deter boats under the command of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard at the northern end of the heavily trafficked waterway.
Actually, we now know that three US Naval vessels were harassed by Iranian ships in the north Persian Gulf. It was first reported that there was only one that was engaged by four Iranian vessels. It has been revealed that two other American ships were chased, and the closest contact was 200 yards.
(This comes, by the way, just on the heels of Iran’s warning it is making the detention of Americans a “priority.” Gosh, and we thought everything was going so well…)Naturally, you can imagine the Obama administration must be thinking, “hey, wait a minute guys, why are you being so mean to us after we just handed you a boatload– er, airplane — of cash?! C’mon, didn’t we have a deal?” Well, you know the old saying, “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.” In this case, actually White House spokesman Josh Earnest might’ve done well to heed it, rather than opening his mouth as he just did to speak about the past week in U.S.- Iran relations.
The intention of four Iranian vessels that approached a U.S. warship in international waters in the Strait of Hormuz this week were not clear, but such actions can escalate tensions, the White House said on Thursday.
“At this point, it’s not clear what the intentions of the Iranian ships were, but the behavior is not acceptable, given that this U.S. ship was in international waters,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said at a news briefing. “These types of actions and incidents are concerning and they have the potential to unnecessarily escalate tensions.”
Ohhh, no doubt Iran is shaking in its boots with those harsh words from the White House. Because, clearly, the words of this administration carry so much weight with the likes of Iran, as evidenced by how well it’s been abiding by the so-called “deal” we signed with them last year.
Perhaps someone might want to clue the White House into Iran’s intentions, since the White House acknowledges they are unclear about them. Even a five-year-old could see what’s going on here. Iran does bad things, the Obama administration makes deals with them, including rewarding them with massive sums of cash and access to new toys. Iran does more bad things; the Obama administration gives them more money.
As Col. West wrote, this is truly Pavlovian in that we continue to reward the most abhorrent of behavior and therefore we get more abhorrent behavior.
Our enemies know there’s no consequence for their actions – in fact, if they play their cards right, they may get a helluva payoff.
Any questions, Josh?
