In the first week of President Trump’s term, liberals are already screaming about his use of executive orders. They point to the fact conservatives were critical of President Obama’s use of executive orders, claiming that President Trump is being hypocritical. In reality, executive orders that direct federal agencies are well within the constitutional authority of the president. What matters is the content of the orders, not the quantity. In fact, some executive orders can be illegal, which is why President Trump is using his authority to repeal those signed under Obama.
President Trump has been using executive orders to lay the groundwork for some of his biggest campaign promises. Now, it seems one of his major campaign promises is in the works to be fulfilled. Not coincidentally, it involves an illegal executive order signed under Obama.
President Donald Trump has a plan to deal with former President Obama’s executive amnesty for children of illegal immigrants who were brought to the United States.
“We’ll be coming out with policy on that over the next period of four weeks,” Trump explained when asked about the so-called “DREAMers” in an interview with ABC News anchor David Muir.In 2012, Obama instituted DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) allowing these children to stay in the country legally. During the campaign, Trump vowed to repeal DACA and DAPA (Deferred Action for Parents of Americans and Lawful Permanent Residents), a promise that anti-amnesty activists are watching closely. In 2012, President Obama asked Congress to act on his DACA proposal. When Congress refused to pass legislation, Obama decided to take matters into his own hands with a “pen and a phone,” and used executive action to push his agenda through. Though not a constitutional use of executive authority, Obama didn’t seem to care.
Luckily, when it comes to executive orders, the new president can eliminate them with the stroke of his own pen. Many wondered whether President Trump intended to keep his campaign promise on DACA, and now indications are that he indeed plans to act on it.
There’s been no word on the exact details of President Trump’s plan, but the announcement shows that something is in the works. After one week, President Trump appears determined to follow through on everything he promised on the campaign trail.
