Liberals have been doing everything they can to tie the Trump team to white nationalism. Whether it’s accusing Steve Bannon of being a neo-Nazi, or holding up the nomination of Jeff Sessions, the left is desperate to find a hidden racist agenda. Now, progressives have Trump adviser Kellyanne Conway in their crosshairs.
From The Hill:
White House adviser Kellyanne Conway’s Twitter account re-tweeted a white nationalist on Tuesday, though she denounced the move and “whoever it is” who sent it out.
The re-tweet was noticed by Buzzfeed reporter Mike Hayes, who took a screen shot of the tweet before it was deleted. Shortly after, news started circulating that Conway had re-tweeted a white nationalist. When Conway was contacted by Buzzfeed for comment, she denied sending the tweet:
White House senior counselor Kellyanne Conway said on Tuesday that she does not know who was operating her Twitter account when it was used to re-tweet a white nationalist.
“I don’t know who had access to my account,” Conway told BuzzFeed on Tuesday.A White House spokeswoman did not immediately respond when asked if Conway’s account had been breached or if she meant that she did not know which one of her aides was operating her Twitter. Conway recently hired her own chief of staff.
“I denounce whoever it is,” Conway told Buzzfeed. “It will be immediately deleted. Everybody makes mistakes.”The contents of the tweet itself were in no way offensive. In fact, there wasn’t a hint of white nationalism:
However, the user Conway re-tweeted does have white nationalist references on their Twitter profile:
Of course, it is unlikely that Conway — or anyone else that had access to her account — was aware of the user’s profile when the message was re-tweeted. It’s more likely that Conway’s staff was simply re-tweeting kind words, not endorsing views they didn’t realize the user held.
Instead of giving Conway the benefit of the doubt, Buzzfeed contacted her, seeking comment on something she wasn’t aware of. It’s the kind of “gotcha” journalism the left plays in the era of President Trump, where even the smallest transgression is viewed as proof of racism. Sadly, this is the is the type of adversarial press the Trump administration has to confront.
