Wow: Liberal Bill Maher asks Bernie Sanders the UNTHINKABLE question; watch him respond

The liberal love-fest that was Tuesday night’s Democrat debate — in which candidates tried to outdo one another by offering more “free stuff” to both Americans and non-Americans alike — left many of us more grounded-in-reality types asking, “yeah, but how will we PAY for that?”

Of course, we’re just greedy, 1%-protecting Debbie Downers raining on the socialist utopia parade when we dare ask such a thing. But how do you think liberals took it to hear one of their own dare to ask this question of everyone’s favorite socialist running for the President of the United States?

In a sign of just how crazy the world’s gotten, I find myself once again appreciating something Bill Maher said. Watch him challenge Bernie Sanders on how the presidential hopeful plans to pay for all the free stuff he’s promising Americans. (You can jump to 3:18 in the video if you’d like to skip the parts where Bill Maher proclaims he wants to help Sanders earn the Democrat nomination by “un-demonizing the word ‘socialist’ for Americans.”)

“They hear socialist and they think herpes, Bernie!” Maher exclaimed.

Actually, Bill, I bet if you asked a lot of conservatives what they think when they hear socialist, it’d be unprintable here.

“What we do is we have to make a movement, if you like, to correlate what we’re talking about, because on every one of the major issues I’m talking about, the American people agree,” explained Sanders. “Do the American people agree that public colleges and universities should be tuition-free, as they are in many other countries? Do the American people agree that the largest corporations and the wealthiest people, who today are doing phenomenally well while the middle-class shrinks, do people believe they should have to pay more in taxes? The American people say yes.”

Sure, the American people say yes. I bet they’d also say yes to a gazillion dollars and a unicorn to ride to work every day — that is, if they even have to work anymore. Which they wouldn’t, of course, in the perfect liberal utopia.

Shockingly, Maher challenged Sanders on his utopian plan, echoing the most common critique of the candidate’s agenda: there’s no way raising taxes on the top 1 percent of Americans could pay for all these programs.

“The tax revenue that we would get just from taxing the people who I think your fans think you’re talking about, the people who own a yacht, does not come close to covering what you want to pay for,” said Maher.

“Not true. Not true,” a Sanders snapped back.

“Come on,” Maher interjected.

Sanders continued, “What I’m saying is there have been articles out there that have been really unfair and wrong. For example, what they are suggesting is that if we move to a Medicare-for-all single-payer program, which guarantees healthcare to all people, it would cost a lot of money. That’s true. But what they forget to tell you is it would be much more cost-effective than this dysfunctional system we have right now, which is the most expensive per capita on earth.”

“But it couldn’t even work in your home state of Vermont!” Maher said. “They were going to institute it, and the governor said it’s going to cost too much money. We just can’t do it. It would be the entire budget. That’s true.”

Sorry, liberals, it’s gotta kinda suck to have none other than Bill Maher burst your bubble. But seriously, how ill-informed and airy-fairy must Sanders’ plan be that even Maher — who acknowledges he wants to do everything possible to help Bernie win the nomination — is poking holes in it?

Wake up, Sanders supporters. Remember the saying, “there’s no such thing as a free lunch?” Yeah, it’s actually true.
