Watching the five candidates being introduced at last night’s Democrat debate, it was hard not to be struck by the decided lack of diversity among this party who claims to be the champion of diversity. Five candidates and not a person of color among them. Of course, as was pointed out to us NUMEROUS times last night, the line-up does include a woman in Hillary Clinton.
Meanwhile, the GOP — the “racist,” “party of white people”– includes among its 2016 candidates a black man (Ben Carson); a woman (Carly Fiorina); an Hispanic (Ted Cruz); a Cuban American (Marco Rubio); and an Indian-American (Bobby Jindal).
So it was interesting to see how everyone’s favorite Democrat National Committee chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz responded when called out on the lack of diversity on stage last night — by none other than everyone’s favorite Latino media guy.
Fusion host Jorge Ramos pressed DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz after the first Democratic debate Tuesday night, asking her why the candidates on the stage were uniformly white.“Does the Democratic Party– when I was watching the debate, what I was thinking was the Democratic Party lacked diversity,” Ramos said. “I didn’t see a Latino, or an African-American, or an Asian on that stage.” “First of all, our president of the United States, who is a Democrat, is African-American. So certainly we have an absolute demonstration of commitment to diversity, because our party nominated the first African-American and then Americans elected him not once, but twice,” Wasserman Schultz responded.
“If you look at our party up and down the ballot, from the way that we select delegates, to the way we elect member of the Democratic National Committee, to the elected officials and the diversity that we have in this country, there is overwhelmingly more diversity…”
“We are the party of diversity,” she concluded. “The Republicans are essentially the party of a monolithic view that is narrow-minded and says, ‘Let’s take this country backwards.’”
Watch for yourself and see Debbie swallow hard and go full deer-in-headlights as she hears Ramos’ question:
Well, I guess she set that straight! Never mind that the line-up last night made the Republican lineup look like a Benetton ad from the 80s. Never mind what you see before your very eyes; the Democrats are the party of diversity and Republicans are “monolithic.” And even the Democrats’ “Great White Hope” — Joe Biden — is, um, white.
To be fair, I guess one could legitimately argue that the Democrat party is now embracing socialists too… But I digress.
Debbie Wasserman Schultz is right about one thing: the Democrats are the party who nominated — and elected — the first “African-American” president. A stunning example of how Americans let identity — in this case, race — trump competence in choosing the leader of our country. And, now, as Hillary Clinton herself suggested last night, it wants Americans to elect our next president based on her sex.
Hey, here’s a concept: how about we make competence and character — fitness to be the leader of this republic — top priority when choosing the next President of the United States? Oh yeah, and Dems, how about you stop TEARING DOWN women and people of color outside the Democrat party?
Sadly, I don’t have high hopes for the Dems on either one of those fronts.
