CHILLING: Look What Univ. of Missouri Wants Students to Report to POLICE

The situation at the University of Missouri continues to spiral out of control, even after two university officials stepped down in response to demands by a group of African-American students up in arms over students’ use of racial slurs and other incidents.

Many were surprised by the swift resignation of university system President Tim Wolfe and Chancellor R. Bowen Loftin, who accepted “responsibility” for “inaction” on the part of school leaders in dealing with racism on the overwhelmingly white Columbia campus.

But the communication campus authorities issued today is downright shocking.

Via The Daily Caller:

As tensions at the University of Missouri continue to rage, the college’s police department has sent a new email to students advising them to call the police if they witness any incidents of “hurtful speech.”

The email arrived in the inboxes of Missouri students Tuesday morning, and copies of it were quickly posted on Twitter.

Read the email yourself:

University of Missouri email

MU’s police essentially tell students to make a criminal report of any hurtful behaviors (complete with license plate numbers, photos, and more), even though they freely acknowledge that hurtful speech is not a crime. But the email says that doesn’t matter, because the school could still take disciplinary action against students.

Yes, we are still in the United States of America, though it’s beginning to look a lot less like the republic our founders established. It appears the racial frenzy overtaking the University of Missouri is now not content with overthrowing university leadership; it’s looking to overthrow the First Amendment as well.

As The Daily Caller suggests, this may be a massive overreach by the university:

As a public university, the University of Missouri is bound by the First Amendment, which guarantees the right to free speech. Court rulings on such matters have repeatedly held that public colleges cannot punish students for otherwise legal speech and expression they engage in outside of class.

Even setting aside the giant problem of First Amendment infringement by a public university, the email presents other problems. Who decides what constitutes “hateful” or “hurtful” speech? It appears to be in the eye of the beholder — so just because something makes me feel bad, that’s “hurtful” speech?

And now speech a student perceives as “hurtful” qualifies as a 911 emergency — in the same category as these examples of reasons to call 911 put forth by 911.gov:

  • A fire
  • A crime, especially if in progress
  • A car crash, especially if someone is injured
  • A medical emergency, such as someone who is unconscious, gasping for air or not breathing, experiencing an allergic reaction, having chest pain, having uncontrollable bleeding, or any other symptoms that require immediate medical attention

Really? How might this affect 911’s ability to deal with these other life-threatening emergencies? Guessing that in the heat of this politically correct panic, no one even bothered to consider that.

On a side note, anyone else find it ironic that cops — demonized as the enemy by the likes of the Black Lives Matter movement — are now being called in to “protect” black students from speech they don’t like?

Where will this end? And, more importantly, who will stop this gross violation of the First Amendment?
